The Old School...

The Old school that closed in 1932 is now the Taynton parish room. It has since then been used by the parish as a meeting place.

For such a small village, it is with some surprise that we find the need to educate local children being filled as early as 1709. In that year Mr. Ben Newton, the newly appointed Rector, founded and supported a Dame School here, but a year later he found the Dame in tears, as her little house has been accidentally burnt down the night before - not, we hope, an early case of vandalism. Two years later a charity school was founded with fourteen pupils, ten of whom were paid for by the same Mr. Newton, and four paid for by the parish. This project, however, collapsed on the death of the founder in 1732, due, we read to the "neglect of the gentry and the indifference of parents to reading and writing."

Parish Room as School

Some five years later, Robert Aldridge left the income from property at Elton and Westbury to John Grove of Taynton, to pay a master or mistress to teach "four poor children" of Taynton to read the Bible.

In May 1830, the Parish Council decided to build a vestry at the south end of the church. One half of the cost-£50-had been donated by the National Schools Society; it was completed by 1831 and the rector established a Sunday School for poor children. Thirty years later two national schools existed, one here and one at the Glasshouse mission room. Mrs. Kezia Taylor taught at Taynton, and Mrs. Hannah Barnard at the Glasshouse.

In 1875, in the course of a great storm the vestry was struck by lightning and damaged. A relative of Mrs. Gifford was there at the time. The Parish Council at first thought that a restoration would be adequate, but many parishioners disagreed. Some consideration was given to convert the old workhouse, but it was finally decided to open a public subscription for the building of a new school. Glebe land opposite the church was used and in 1883, the new school was opened under Miss Phillips. The Diocesan Inspector reported that at his visit, 46 out of 49 children were present and showed "a creditable improvement in tone and attainment, many children answering really well". By 1893, the church building had been altered and the vestry was used for Sunday School and Band of Hope meetings, so the new school was purely a day school.

Miss Olive Davis, Mrs.Wintle and her three brothers and Mr. Billy Snow all attended this school and have affectionate memories. There were in their time ( 1920's) about thirty children at the school with two teachers, Miss Brown, who lived with the Davis family, and Miss Phelps who cycled from May Hill. Pupils came - walked - from Kent's Green, generally across field paths; from Glasshouse and from Taynton, and no allowance was made for dark nights or the weather. School was from nine until four p.m. with an hour and a half for dinner, which had to be taken from home each morning. If the children wanted a drink, one of the bigger boys was sent to the Rectory for water. The one room with its long combined desks and benches and its--high-teacher's desk, was warmed by a tortoise stove, guarded by a rail on which wet clothes were put to dry before the return home. The playground was the small piece of field, fenced off and graveled, resulting in many sore knees. As well as the three "Rs", the girls were taught needlework and the boys had gardening lessons at the Rectory, under the tuition of Mr. Stephens the baker at Tibberton. An annual prize for the best pupil was donated by Lady Weddurburn of Meredith.

As the number of children was declining the school was closed in 1933, and the children taken by bus to Tibberton school. The old schoolroom after being neglected for years, has been bought by the Parochial Council and is enjoying a new lease of life as a meeting place for the village.

Taynton School Admission Records 1866 to1932

The National School was built on to the south side of Taynton church in 1831. It also served as a vestry. The National School Society contributed half the cost - £50 on condition that a Sunday school was also established there.
In 1883 a new school was built on glebe land on ground opposite the church. The Rev Bagshaw was the driving force and the money was raised entirely by public subscription.
(No admission records have been found for the period 1831 to 1866).
