The Taynton Society...

AIMS.

The Society was formed in 1978.

The Society's aims are to promote events and undertake projects for the benefit of the village and it's inhabitants and to help retain some of our past traditions.

Planting daffodils throughout the village, modernising the Parish Room, hosting Christmas parties, organising outings and helping and entertaining elderly and disabled people are just some of the things that we have done.

Four times a year we hold our 'Gatherings' where we have a speaker on such diversified subjects as The experiences of an Auctioneer or a Beven Boy to Corn Dolley and Basket Making.

MEMBERSHIP.

Membership is open to all the residents of Taynton and the surrounding parishes. Membership subscription is £2.00 per annum from January 1st to December 31st and allows entrance to "gatherings" free of charge. Non members admission £1.00.

To join the Society contact the Treasurer or any committee member.

CHAIRMANS REPORT.

Exracts from the Chairman’s Report, February 22nd 2001

The Millennium year has been a momentous one and a memorable one for the village. Society members made a major contribution to the planning and operations involved in the village’s sign, time capsule and party/barbecue.  Whether it was helping practically with the sign – concreting, painting or erecting it, preparing, cooking or serving food society members had a hand in it and the society contribution to the funds was vital in making it happen.

The society has had an excellent year of gatherings.  We started with an excellent practical demonstration and talk on the art of basket making from John Cale at the spring meeting on 3rd March 2000.  It was informative and entertaining and a few of us came away with useful souvenirs.

There was a memorable trip round Gloucestershire in photographs for our summer gathering from Mr & Mrs Lane on the 2nd June.  This featured many interesting and beautiful scenes around the county.

The world of antiques and auctions featured in our autumn meeting on 1st September.  John Parrott of Smiths Auctioneers told us of his work and the goings on in the auction world.  Although this was a select group we made up for it with 36 at the December meal.  For £6.00 per head we had a festive menu ably produced by many of the committee.  Thanks to everyone involved including absent committee member Jean Marsh.

Two successful raffles were held to boost funds and help pay for speakers.  Thanks to the hardworking ticket sellers!

The society’s finances have been boosted by a marvelous fund raising effort from Olive Davies who organised a very successful coffee morning at the Parish Room which added some £300.00 to the funds. Olive Davis handed over to Mary Hawkins the responsible job of Treasurer.  A single Treasurer’s Account has been set up at the Newent branch of the Halifax.

Calls on funds have been considerable. A  £250 contribution was made to the Millennium Fund towards the cost of the new sign on the village green.

The Society contributed £100 towards the purchase at auction of important village records – the Deeds to Taynton Court Farm when in Benjamin Disraeli’s ownership.  These are now safe for posterity at Gloucestershire Record Office. £72 (half the cost) was paid towards the mowing of Hownhall Green
