Taynton & Tibberton Women's Institute...

Tibberton W.I. was formed in July 1925 and became Tibberton & Taynton W.I. probably in the 1930’s. The Gloucester Federation of Women's Institutes was, however, founded in 1919.

To date we have a membership of 49 ladies and meet on the 3rd Wednesday of every month in Taynton & Tibberton Village Hall. Entertainment, usually in the form of a guest speaker, follows a short meeting. However, joining the W.I. opens up many horizons for ladies who wish to further other interests. Denman College in Oxfordshire holds courses on numerous subjects, the Gloucestershire Federation organize many trips and functions. Some ladies just attend the meetings when they are available to attend, but others like to get more involved with issues of the day. The W.I. gives a wonderful opportunity to forge new and lasting friendships as well as learn new subjects.

August Report

Our President, Jennifer Tydeman, congratulated our member, Margaret Burlow on her recent trip to London to collect her Land Army medal from No.10 Downing Street.  She was one of only 50 ladies invited to collect her medal in person.

Nicholas Clark, a keen traveller, entertained us with his tales of a holiday he and his wife had taken in Thailand.  He had us laughing from the outset with photographs of how many people can be crammed onto a motorcycle and how many can be carried on the back of a tuk tuk.  This is a motorized rickshaw which acts as a taxi.  However, this holiday did not visit the normal tourist haunts.  They travelled north in a group with two guides to the area known as The Golden Triangle bordering Laos and Malaysia.  40 years ago this would certainly not have been a safe area for tourists, being the heart of the opium trade.  The group then trekked through fabulous scenery visiting and staying overnight in primitive hilltribe villages.  We were amazed to spot a satellite dish on the side of one bamboo hut.  Each village has a school room and school lessons are sent via satellite to all the villages.  The viewing television and satellite dish are powered by solar panels!  Incredible when you think that the villages are only linked by mud tracks with no proper roads.  A fascinating and amusing talk, but we weren’t queuing up to find out the name of the tour operator.

The following Saturday our walking group were enjoying a particularly picturesque part of the River Severn at Arlingham.  The views across the river to Newnham were spectacular and the four mile walk was followed by a pub lunch at The Red Lion.

At the end of the month our annual trip out took us, along with some of our men folk, on a visit to Weston’s Cider.  We were amazed how large the factory has become and found the tour fascinating and enjoyed the cider tasting which followed.  Bottles clanking in carrier bags we returned to our cars and made our way through the lovely Herefordshire countryside to Stockton Bury, just north of Leominster.  Here our lunch had been pre-booked at The Tithe Barn, which is part of the Gardens in the Orchard at Stockton Bury.  Within minutes of taking our seats superb dishes of food arrived.  The chef has earned himself quite a reputation for excellent food and we certainly weren’t disappointed.  Lunch over we gently meandered through the wonderful gardens.  The late summer crocosmias, Japanese anenomies, heleniums, and dahlias were just some of the colourful plants making this such an outstanding garden.  Yes, you’ve guessed it – following the garden visit we were all assembled back in the garden at the Tithe Barn enjoying a welcome cup of tea and sampling the delicious home-made cakes.  A fantastic day out and for a change this summer the sun actually shone!
