This web site accompanies a survey by local residents interested in preserving the London Road area's history and architecture. One way of doing this could be to form a new Conservation Area, but Brighton and Hove City Council already has planning policies (e.g. Supplementary Planning Guidance SPGBH8 28th October 2002) intended to provide protection for buildings of local interest. Residents wishing to preserve this area's history could identify buildings of special interest and act to ensure that the relevant planning policies are applied.
Development of the London Road area now looks imminent. Property developers, St James's Investments, are interested in forming proposals centred on New England House. Although the two parties have now separated, both St James's Investments and Tesco still own properties which they have brought up in the area with development in mind. There is also a separate plan to build a new Open Market. One Planet Living also has an interest in London Road, as do community groups such as Another London Road.
Identifying buildings of special interest requires knowledge both of history (e.g. their former use) and architecture. One of the best records of the history of buildings in the London Road area is found in the James Gray Collection archived by The Regency Society.
Below is a numbered list of buildings in London Road. Where the number is underlined, there is an active link to a annotated photograph of the building (as it once looked) taken from the James Gray Collection. Click on the relevant number to view the annotated photo to find out about the history of the building.

Early settlement, the Railway Estate (from 1841), the arrival of many London Road shops, The Open Market (post 1918) and now The New England Quarter.
Residents interested in the local history of the London Road area and New England Quarter (indeed how this tall church resembling Noah's Arc came to be built) should look for the 50-page pamphlet by Round Hill resident Christopher R. Tullet. This is normally on sale at St Bartholomew's Church, though the pamphlet is currently being revised.
St Bartholomews Parish Church - a glimpse into the past - Published by St Bartholomews Church (Ann Street) with support from The Regency Society and Duncan McNeil.
The pamphlet, ”St Bartholomews Parish - A glimpse into the past” documents the history of the area from Earliest Settlement, through to the expansion of The Railway Estate on the arrival of the London-Brighton line in 1841 and the construction and engineering it brought to the area to the arrival of many retail shops in London Road and the Open Market between London Road and the Level.
