1665: Much of the lower town is destroyed by the sea


Just five years ago, Brighthelmstone was the second largest town in Sussex with an economy based on North Sea fishing, but coastal erosion has destroyed the livelihood of our mariners. If they cannot set sail and bring the fish ashore, then other coastal towns such as Lowestoft, Yarmouth, Hull, Peterhead and Fraserburgh and villages right along the Moray Firth are going to land Britain's herring. Brighton's North Sea fishing days are now numbered.
