The above guide to Pain Centres in the UK has been produced by The Pain Management Special Interest Group of the Pain Society (PMPSIG) chaired by Dr Tim Johnson of the Manchester and Salford Pain Centre.

4 out of the 7 people on my 16 day residential Pain Management Programme for chronic pain sufferers were the victims of Road Traffic Accidents. We were accepted on the course on the basis that no known cure was available to lessen our severe persistent pain. Victims of Road Traffic accidents with chronic pain will typically spend months looking for treatments (my elderly father drove me approximately 4,800 miles around South East England following people who thought they could help through NHS or complementary treatments such as Pain Blocks, Mind / Body focus, Psychotherapy, Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Massage, TENS machines, Physiotherapy and Hydrotherapy).

It would be a fitting memorial for Doctor Richard Russell, to whom Brighton owes so much, if the city of Brighton & Hove could have a Pain Management Programme, as exists in smaller towns, and if hydrotherapy pools, such as exist at The Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases in Bath and in hospitals such as Crawley Sussex, could be provided in Brighton & Hove Hospitals. Today's patients no longer have access to Doctor Russell's bathing machines on Brighton beach and warmer water is needed for patients with disabilities and chronic pain as well as our many elderly residents.

More investment is also urgently needed in the provision of Botox and Pain Clinics in the UK
