Last night, Brighton's artillery unit of guns was fired to offer a salute to George, Prince of Wales, our highest ranking official royal visitor.
Unfortunately, the gunner was killed, but other than that, everything went smoothly. The town presented a massive firework display and the whole of the Steine was lit up as the 21-year-old Prince of Wales emerged from Grove House to share in the festivities.
Today, the Prince is expected to participate in a morning hunt with stag hounds and later to attend a ball at Sam Shergold's Castle Inn. The Prince is also hoping to be present at a theatre production in North Street some time during his stay, which is scheduled for eleven days.
Asked about the Prince of Wales's first impression of Brighthelmstone, the Duke of Cumberland reported that his nephew was "highly delighted with the town and intended to visit again". However, the Duke of Cumberland disclosed that it was unlikely that the Prince would visit Brighton Races on this occasion. "The turf on White Hawk Down has become a little bare and the ground is rather muddy following the inaugaration of Brighton Races at the end of July. Perhaps, next visit", reported the Duke.
