"Prinny" to visit Brighton again on advice from his physicians

It is expected that the Prince of Wales will make further visits to Brighton later this month and in the early summer of 1785

It has been disclosed from the Duke of Cumberland that the Prince of Wales has been suffering from swollen glands and that his doctors regard it essential that he makes regular trips to Brighton to "take the waters". The Prince therefore intends to try the sea-cure, popularized by Dr Richard Russell over 30 years ago.

The services of Brighton's premier "bather", John 'Smoaker' Miles, as well as those of our most celebrated "dipper", Martha Gunn, are likely to be needed. Both have been instructed to remain in the town for the current season and to clear their diaries for June 1785.

Asked if the Prince was likely to require any other therapy, the Duke of Cumberland confirmed that he would be taking his nephew to the second horse race meeting of the season on 2 & 3 August 1784. He added that the race meetings had proved successful in bringing continued prosperity to Brighton and that he hoped eventually to extend them to four days. He anticipated that this would create 30 new seasonal jobs ranging from posts for stable-boys to those for bookmakers.
