1807: the Theatre Royal opens in New Road (look out for ghosts!)

The Prince of Wales gave Brighton New Road. Now we have a new theatre, replacing the old theatre in Duke Street. While Brighton went on to be known as London-by-the-sea, the Theatre Royal went on to stage many pre-West End productions. Most of today's top actors and actresses, especially those who have been on British television, have played at the Theatre Royal in Brighton. Some of the world's leading dance companies have also put on shows. The theatre has a history of its own, even including ghosts!
