The Prince of Wales is proud to announce that the new Riding House attached to the Royal Stables has now been completed.
The Riding House, a first in British architecture, is one of the largest single rooms in the world. The Prince of Wales used it to exercise his horses. They needed indoor space when the British weather made conditions outside very cold and slippery.
The building later became Brighton's Corn Exchange and is now frequently used for computer fairs, which are otherwise held in the large areas provided by Town Halls and Sports Centres.
The large rooms next to the Corn Exchange, which went on to accommodate Brighton's Art Gallery and Museum, were used as the Prince's indoor tennis court. Today, world-class tennis is played annually in Brighton in the main hall of the Conference Centre on the sea-front.
