What should be done to Palmeira Square today?

Listening and note-taking [the 6 opinions are read aloud and unseen by the students]

We asked some local people to give their opinions and this is what they said:

1. Mattie Davis discotheque owner

  • Well, at the moment it's just being used as a toilet for dogs. You can't even lie on the grass! If you ask me, the site would be perfect for an open air discotheque. Fences could be erected to keep out the dog-owners, and young people could be charged a small admission which would entitle them to use all the club facilities.
  • 2. Tim Price car park owner

  • In my opinion, the grass should be dug up and replaced by concrete. There's a real need for more street-level parking places in Hove. Palmeira Square is an ideal site for a car park because it's near so many good pubs and restaurants.
  • 3. Eve Graham dog owner

  • It would be a tragedy if Palmeira Square is altered in any way. It's so handy for the old people living nearby. Brighton Council won't let us take our dogs on the beach any more, so where else can we go?
  • 4. Monica Heuchert Cambridge First Certificate student

  • I like Palmeira Square as it is. It's very near my school and I can do my homework in the sun without going back to my host family.
  • 5. Jane Sellsbury supermarket owner

  • Clearly, the site is ideal for a modern superstore. Holiday makers could buy their food at reasonable prices and there are many residents living in the area too. We would build a place for parents to leave their children, good parking facilities and a comfortable air-conditioned shopping hall.
  • 6. Billy Cummings football manager

  • It's funny you should ask me that. Only the other day, I was thinking how good it would be to have a football training centre in Palmeira Square. The young people in the streets around Hove really need a place like this where they can come after school!
