April
3rd:
Easter
Sunday, and Courtney phones around for private investigators in the
yellow pages and eventually comes across Tom Grant.
Tom Grant and his assistant Ben Klugman then met with Courtney at the Peninsula
hotel in the afternoon.
Courtney informs Grant that her husband had fled a rehab and she was trying to
locate him, she explained that possibly Kurt had gone east to stay with Michael
Stipe of R.E.M but failed to mention Kurt had been seen at the Lake Washington
house on Saturday, April 2nd.
She had apparently cancelled Kurt’s only credit card and without
it he
couldn’t get any money. Grant; “Initially our job was to contact
the credit card company and find out where the activities were occurring and
where the attempts were being made… it’s harder to trace a card after
its been cancelled.” Tom
Grant's explanation
"Cali tried to use the $100,000-limit MasterCard Kurt had given him to
buy her [Jessica Hopper] an airline ticket but the charge was denied… Courtney
told him she’d cancelled Kurt’s cards” – Heavier
than
Heaven. Again, is this offering an explanation to the location of the ‘Sea
First’ credit card, or had Courtney cancelled others that she never divulged
to Grant??
During this
meeting Courtney “rambled on in an angry rage about
the 9 ½ million dollars Kurt was walking away from,” in
reference to the Lollapalooza tour which Kurt didn’t want
to do. She also mentioned the fact Kurt wanted a divorce. Tom
Grants explanation
Grant subcontracted with an investigator in the Seattle area called Ernie Barth,
and was instructed to set up surveillance at Dylan Carlson’s house (Heavier
Than Heaven) and
Caitlin Moore’s apartment.
John
Silva and Sara Hoehn saw Kurt on this day, along with numerous
other sightings;
although these later claims are unsubstantiated.
Cali subsequently told Grant he checked the greenhouse for signs of
Kurt on this
day, but didn’t check again.
