April 7th:

At 2:15am on Thursday morning Grant and Dylan arrive at the Lake Washington residence to commence a search not only for Kurt but evidence that he had recently been there. As previously planned Dylan firstly approached the house alone as to not alert Kurt of Grant’s presence if indeed he was there. Dylan returned after sometime and reported no-one was home, Grant; "I wondered what took so long if no one was home?" (Case Manual, p. 15).

"Dylan had a dependency problem himself...Anybody with a dependency problem can be bought out or manipulated, but Dylan was the only guy Kurt trusted at that point." (Beyond Nirvana, p. 351)

From a payphone they proceeded in calling Courtney who was at Rosemary Carroll’s house in Los Angeles. Dylan talked with Courtney and at Grant’s request asked her to contact the alarm company to disable the alarm periodically so they could enter the house. During this call Carroll overheard Courtney tell Dylan to check the greenhouse – a claim they both deny. Keep in mind the alarm service report, its of crucial importance in establishing exactly when the house was accessed.
Upon returning to the Lake Washington house at 2:45am, they gained access through an unlocked kitchen window. Grant records the search on pocket tape recorder to document what events may transpire. Dylan commented that the house was unusually clean; “I’ve never seen the house this clean before.” They noticed a television was left on in one of the bedrooms upstairs which Dylan told Grant was Cali’s bedroom. They left satisfied Kurt was nowhere to be found, Grant dropped Dylan off at his apartment and Grant returned to his hotel for a few hours sleep.
Grant didn’t notice the room above the garage since it was dark and raining and Dylan never mentioned its existence. Ian Halperin and Max Wallace tested this theory themselves, and confirmed the greenhouse is obscured at night and not easily noticeable (WKKC? - p.145).

Grant picked Dylan up later that day and they resumed the search, continuing to search Kurt’s local haunts to no avail. They found Kurt’s Dodge Dart, parked in front of a friends house.

In the evening they headed for the small town of Carnation, located 30 miles east of Seattle, to search for Kurt at the property located there. Dylan became unsure as to the location due to it being dark and eventually they turned back after being unsuccessful. Dylan attempted to contact Courtney from a payphone to get further instructions…

‘That same day an emergency call was placed from Courtney’s suite to 911 about a “possible overdose victim” at the Peninsula Hotel. The police, fire department and ambulance all arrived at the scene to find

Courtney along with Eric Erlandson. Courtney was taken to Century City Hospital, where she was released into police custody two and a half hours later. She was immediately placed under arrest for “possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a hypodermic syringe and possession/receiving stolen property [a prescription pad]." Courtney claims she had an allergic reaction to the tranquilizer Xanax. Courtney was released that afternoon after posting $10,000 bail, and immediately checked into Exodus Recovery Centre.’

In Love & Death it is revealed Rosemary discovered a note in Courtney's backpack which she had left at Carroll's apartment on April 6th. - "Written in Courtney's handwriting are two words: 'Get Arrested,' It is one of Courtney's typical 'to do' notes to herself." - Refering to Courtney's April 7th arrest: Carroll, "She planned the whole thing".

Reliant on Heavier than Heaven it states that Cali was no longer staying at the Lake Washington house and was at Jennifer Adamson’s apartment, because “he was afraid to be in the Cobain’s house” – you have to question why exactly was Cali so concerned about being at the house…?
Cali, along with Jennifer and a friend Bonnie Dillard returned to the Lake Washington house around dusk on the order of Courtney to search for Kurt. They are described as apprehensive in their search and left as soon as possible. Cali supposedly left a note for Kurt.

Sometime later around 4pm, Cali then leaves Seattle to join Courtney in Los Angeles.

Dylan finally manages to contact Courtney after her ordeal and she informs them to return to the house to look for the shotgun, which obviously wasn’t there through Eric's admission. Why did she ask Grant and Dylan to do the same thing two days later?

At 9:45pm Grant and Dylan did indeed return to the Lake Washington residence, this time Grant discovered the note left by Cali on the main stairway that wasn’t there on the previous visit.

Published in Love & Death it is stated Grant set up a scenario where Dylan, who was wired with a cassette, would be accompanied by Mark Lanegan of Screaming Tree's and visit Caitlin Moore's apartment on the pretext of scoring heroin to determine whether Caitlin had heard from Kurt. She claimed to have not seen him all week.

Exclusive to ‘Never Fade Away’ by Dave Thompson (1994): - “… April 7th, the Seattle police department reportedly received another summons to the Cobain residence, when a phone call alleging a disturbance was apparently received. Five minutes later, a source insists, a second call retracted it, insisting that the report was merely a hoax." - p.161
