The Band

The Woodpecker Band is well known in the south of England for its coverage of festivals, large regional ceilidhs and smaller local events. The Band has a large repertoire of traditional and modern dance music, mostly from the British Isles, but also including music from other countries. The band's unique sound is a product of traditional and modern elements of music and style fused with a solid electric rhythm section giving the band an easily identifiable contemporary edge.

Who's Who ...
Mathew Green, fiddle
Mat, squire of Bampton Morris, is also a musician for Rogue Morris. His distinctive fiddle playing can be heard on Magpie Lane recordings. His unique style comes from playing in the Arnold Woodley team and now continues the Bampton fiddle tradition of the famous Jinky Wells.

Jeff Dando, melodeon
Jeff learned to dance and play melodeon at college. An active member of Bampton Morris, he is also a musician for Rogue.

Ali Smith, bass guitar
Ali comes from Oxford. He has wide experience of playing guitar and bass in rock and folk bands. His devotion to music and dance has led him to morris dancing, and he has recently joined the side at Kirtlington.

Dave Eynstone, guitar
Dave has played guitar with many different bands around Oxford. He hatches many of the Woodpeckers tune arrangements. His diverse musical experience has built a recording reputation.

Steve Finley, drums and percussion
Steve has covered a wide variety of music and has played in many bands both at home and on the continent.

Thankyou for a wonderful evening, everyone says what a good time they had, we had the time of our lives. Can't wait to dance to your wonderful music again.

Just a short note of thanks for your top notch entertainment. All of us who have heard you before enjoyed ourselves hugely & those who hadn't, well, they had a real treat. We are grateful for all your efforts.

.....You may or may not recall, I recall very little myself, that you played for my 50th birthday party in April. I and most of my guests eventually sobered up and my wife decided, after some deliberation, to speak to me again. Apart from the excellent drink, food and company we all agreed that your presence made the evening. And so, belatedly, we all send and say a very large thankyou for a wonderful evening and hope to see you soon.

The Woodpecker Band - here's a ceilidh band that play with great zest and commitment to the job in hand: watch the room light up the moment they start playing.
Hugh Rippon - caller & author
We would just like to say thank you so much for playing so brilliantly at out wedding. Everybody had such a fantastic time and have been commenting on how good the barn dancing was. You were by far the best band we've seen. Thank you also for suggesting the line up at the end of our night so we could say good bye to everyone - it was a really good idea and worked well. Thanks again.
