INTRODUCING
THE 35th REGIMENT OF FOOT
(ROYAL SUSSEX REGIMENT) PROJECT
THE WARS FOR AMERICA

Envisaged as the first of a number of LIVING HISTORY groups with its headquarters based at the redoubt fortress Eastbourne in Sussex, England, the aim being to raise awareness amongst the population of the “COUNTY REGIMENTS” unique history, in particular the period 1755-1782.

Initially the group will concentrate its efforts on the period 1755-1763 which includes what must be the 35th Regiment of Foot's most famous or perhaps more infamous incident-- its involvement in the fall of FORT WILLIAM HENRY. The ensuing real “massacre”, being the major source for the NOVEL written by JAMES FENIMORE COOPER’S----- “LAST OF THE MOHICANS”. The period includes the Regiments later involvement in the taking of LOUISEBOURG and QUEBEC. For this period only “hat” companies will be reproduced.

For the second stage, which will be considered ONLY after the first stage has been completed the group will re-equip for the period 1776-1782 concentrating on the period of another of the Regiments more famous engagements BUNKER HILL (Breeds Hill) at the start of THE AMERICAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE (AMERICAN REVOLUTION).As only the “Flank” companies were involved during this encounter the group will therefore spilt into two---the tallest forming the GRENADIER company and the shortest forming the LIGHT company.

Although recruiting in the “present day” catchment area (plus adjacent counties) the Regiment will also have the aim of being INTERNATIONAL and encourage the growth of sections NOT SEPARATE COMPANIES in NORTH AMERICA and IRELAND. (America because of a thriving “French and Indian War” interest and Ireland -because the 35th was originally raised in that part of the BRITISH ISLES  and known unofficially as THE BELFAST REGIMENT, also because the 35th had spent some thirty odd years in Ireland prior to being shipped to America and therefore would have had numerous Irish personnel.) The separate sections when together will be combined in such a way that all members will have a sense of “REGIMENT” rather than just their national section. The idea being that American, English and Irish personal drilling, working and “fighting” side by side will form friendships that will ensure the 35th recreated units lasting existence.

In both the 1755-1763 and 1776-1782 periods the recreated unit will endeavour to visit in full uniform and take part in joint events with other period units, sites of historical interest. No actual service site of the real Regiments history (or British Army history) will be disregarded. As both periods saw the 35th extensively engaged in the NORTH AMERICAN theatre, this area will naturally figure high on any agenda however as the Regiment also saw service in the Caribbean towards the end of The American War of Independence this area could equally figure on some future tour.
