Legio Secunda Augusta
Re-enactment group centered around Hampshire,Wiltshire, Dorset,
West
Sussex and Berkshire, devoted to portraying military and civilian
life
in Roman Britain during the first two
centuries AD. Established for nearly ten years, Legio
Secunda Augusta has a flourishing display programme during
the
performing season and an ever- increasing bookings schedule in schools
to satisfy demand for a more direct exposure to "The Invaders" section
of the national curriculum.Legio Secunda Augusta regards the
civilian
side of its protrayals as being equally important to the military,
hence
the value of it's Domina ladies section as well as male "civilian"
performers.
As one of the more forward thinking living history groups it has a

18th Century
NEW FRANCE AND OLD ENGLAND
One of the "better" living history groups in the U.K.
as
it is a Nation wide organisation we suggest contacting---
Ralph Mitchard -54
Lower Whitelands, Radstock, Bath, BA3 3jp
Colonial Civilian Life
Although strictly speaking the members of this group
are involved with NEW FRANCE AND OLD ENGLAND their unique knowledge and
quality of their displays deserve a seperate mention. The "H.Q." is a
fully
equiped 18th century colonial cabin complete with period oven which is
often the site of school visits. Members do also travel most within 25
miles or so of their homes. Their members are from all parts of the
country
so a visit to YOUR area MAY be possible. The leader of this group also
has an extensive knowledge of "Native Americans" of the period his name
is---
David Spencer and he can be contacted at------

GEORGE BAILEY (yours truly)
With over 20 years 1750's-1815 living history, and over
40+ years of historic interest behind me a I have accumulated a great
deal
of knowledge for both military and civilian life from the 17th century
onwards. The spread of interest allows me to make any talk based on the
periods mentioned to be both informative and RELEVANT to today's
culture.
The spread of history, some 75 years also allows history to be shown as
a story of development. Main topics--THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR
(especially
the story of the fall of Fort William Henry), THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION,
and lastly THE NAPOLEONIC WARS (the latter more from the French aspect)
Alongside normal "living history" events I have been
involved in filming for the B.B.C., corporate events and employed at
sites
such as Elizabeth Castle Jersey in the capacity of "expert
speaker".
I am willing to give talks up to 70 miles from Brighton (in the U.K.)
but
if travelling in the U.S.A.(which I love) I am willing to make a detour
if time and/cause permits or warrants it.
Below are two photographs illustrating what to me is
the greatest reward of the hobby-- the first demonstrating the function
of a tinderbox to school children, the second assisting Maj. Gen Ian
Mackay
Dick of the British army of the Rhine, in the use of a "Brown
Bess"
Musket.
(I would like to thank Paul Chamberlaine for permission
to use the former photograph, and Soldier
Magazine for the use of the later)

20th CENTURY
NON UNIFORMED SPEAKERS
DR STEPHEN TURNBALL.
World Wide anyone at all
interested
in Medieval Warfare or SAMURAI/JAPANESE history
will
know Mr TURNBULL's name, well. His "work" (I say"work" because believe
it or not, Stephen's military history involvement is NOT his
full
time occupation) involves him in work at renowned places such as the
LEEDS
armouries and all over JAPAN where his reputation as a non Japanese
writer
on "their" history is second to non.
Stephen's superb books on both subjects
must fill a good few spaces in most enthusiasts library, more recently
his work has involved him in advising in Electronic Arts computer
game SHOGUN
which probably accounts for its quality and authenticity being
recognised
with several awards, again World Wide. (I for one am addicted to this
ultimate
Strategy + real time mind blowing battlefield experience.)
Stephen's fully illustrated and
often
thought provoking talks on his given subjects, are widely sought after
so if you are planning to ask this thoroughly nice guy to speak, give
yourself
or your organisation plenty or time to arrange things. Stephen seems
willing
to travel to most places BUT THIS MUST FIT IN WITH HIS FULL TIME
CAREER
For futher info on this plus a
wealth
of other SAMURAI information visit as expected STEPHEN
