Roche Abbey, South Yorks

Foundation: 1147   Dissolution: 1538

Midi:      My Reflection In Your Eyes By Bruce DeBoer

Who could imagine that serene Roche Abbey,
once fairly isolated in medieval times,
would now be surrounded by large, noisy population areas?

Survival included an abundance of water to support
approximately 175 men affiliated with the Cistercian Order.
They became some of the first hydraulic engineers.

Except for surviving church walls,
this site looks like a floor plan lined with foundation stones.

A man-made stream flowed, below floor level, through the Abbey's
middle.  Fresh water was drawn upstream.  Sewage exited
downstream.  The latrine foundations(on both sides of the
picture) rose above the water -- a novel feat of engineering.
