What Can I do to protect my Pc Myself ?
There are some simple things you can do :-
Install Anti-Virus Software and make sure that you both
keep it up to date and that you scan the computer fully on a regular
basis.
Install a Firewall and keep it up to date.
Install Spyware scanning software and make sure that
you both keep it up to date and that you scan the computer fully on a
regular basis.
Do not open files/Email attachments from anybody that
you do not know. File extensions to be wary of are .exe, .scr, .bat,
.com, .pif, .zip as they are all know to be common ways of hiding a
virus.
Do not respond to emails that claim to come from your
Bank , Ebay or some other financial company asking you to confirm you
login details as there is some kind of problem. This is known as "Phishing"
and the link you follow from the email will direct you to a site that
will attempt to steal your details.
Make sure you do Windows Update on a regular basis.
Later versions of Windows have a facility to automate these updates so
that they load for you in the background. The important ones are the
ones marked "Critical Updates" which will prevent hackers form
using your machine
