As a new development in
the reviews section, we have decided to write a few comments on the best
gig we've seen so far this year.
Simon and Mandragora have
been friends and fellow musicians of ours for over ten years now. In the
last decade Mandragora have had more line-up changes than Dr
Brown (no mean feat!) and so we didn't know what we were going to hear
from them. So the brilliant set they put in was a great delight. The band
sound very different from the last time I saw them, now the comparisons
are a mix of Loop Guru and Transglobal Underground with a
dash of ON-U sounds. Simon's guitar and Al's bass still make the
music uniquely Mandragora, but much improved (in my opinion) for
its more modern setting.
There is a new Mandragora
CD (on Delerium Records) available soon, featuring Arthur Brown
(Fire!) on vocals on some tracks.
This performance confirms
the Ozrics as the most professional psychedelic band on the circuit.
never a bass or guitar line out of place. delays always at the right setting
and keyboards making the right whoosh at the right point. The Ozrics
effortlessly ran through a selection of their greatest songs of the past
15 years in a seamless psychedelic extravaganza. with so many tunes to
choose from, I guess it's inevitable that some faves aren't going to be
there. I would like to have seen Kick Muck and Ayurvedic, but I guess you
can't have everything. It's going to have to be a prettyspecial gig to
knock this gig off the top spot this year!
Many thanks to Mark and
all at the Wedgewood Rooms for sticking us on the guest list.
