This software is idiot proof in terms of ease of use.
The print quality is not too bad but I feel is let down by the lack of conventional notation above the tab, this lets down what would be an excellent program and somewhat makes the end result look a bit unprofessional.
Another disappointing factor with Guitar Pro is its limited note effects, it has the usual hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides but no palm muting label, an absolute essential for Rock and Metal tabbing. The ability to set the time to bend and release notes however is excellent and though this isn't printed as such it does make a big difference when playing back the track via the soundcards guitar voices.
Another excellent feature on this software is the Phrase Trainer. In this mode you can select parts of the song , reduce the speed and loop it. The idea is that you play along with this until the section is comfortable then increase the speed until your going at full tilt. The program will even increase the tempo by a notch on each repeat so your fingers need never leave the fretboard.
Guitar Pro weighs in at £30 ($49), the second most expensive in the test.
I think that if they sorted out a standard notation option and increased the note effects library this program would be a winner but as it stands and with the cost taken into account it just doesn't grab the Guitar Best Buy Award.
Last but by no means least , Power Tab.
Power Tab opens up not dissimilar to Guitar Pro and with note entry virtually identical, so it's easy to use.
Power Tab goes further than Guitar Pro though by having standard notation displayed as well as the tab. A very good feature on this software is the ability to have tab for 6-string,7 -string and bass guitar as well as some altogether weird creations (3-string bass anybody???)
It's note effects arsenal is bang on, hammers, pulls, slides, taps and the all important palm muting.
Power Tab does however require that you have some knowledge of music theory, it won't insert bar lines or repeats for you so you have to know where to put them.
Power Tab allows you to tab out up to 7 guitar and bass parts at any one time using either the six line tab and/or rhythm slashes, this is particularly useful during guitar solos where you tab out the solo and have the rhythm track as rhythm slashes above it.
The print quality is absolutely superb and even rivals the top end notation software, I would stick my neck out and say for guitar and bass notation this beauty leaves Finale and Sibelius for dead!!!!
