Performance Techniques For Acoustic FingerStyle Guitar

Gilbert Isbin

This month we're going to look at Hammer-ons

Hammer-On (HO): The right hand plucks the first note and the subsequent notes are played by the left hand.

Using your 4 fingers of the left hand gives 10 combinations on adjacent or non-adjacent strings.
1,2; 1,3; 1,4; 2,3; 2,4; 3,4; 1,2,3; 1,2,4; 1,3,4; 1,2,3,4.

The 4 last combinations are called MULTIPLE HAMMER-ONS, a great way to group notes together and play quickly with less effort.

As we are dealing with fingerstyle playing the hammer-ons might appear as fretted notes only or in combination with open strings in the :

MELODY VOICE
MIDDLE VOICE
BASS

Here are some examples of HO's as

A) SINGLE NOTE LINES

In the MELODY VOICE

a) as fretted notes only .......... measures 1-2
b) as a combination of fretted notes and open strings .......... measures 3-4
c) as a part of a picking pattern .......... measure 5

In the MIDDLE VOICE

Part of a picking pattern .......... measure 6
