Welcome to the home page for the HILES

One-Name Study web page

The surname HILES is unusual and the study is interested in discovering more about its distribution and the ways in which family groups interlink with a line of descent which is already traced back to the sixteenth century for Somerset and Dorset, the eighteenth century for Shropshire and the Seventeenth Century for Lincolnshire.

The HILES One-Name Study is registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) (No. 2186)

THE HILES COLLECTION

HILES COLLECTION consists of a GRO database containing over 6,500 records of births, mariages and death from 1837 to 1950 relating to HILES, but also includes references to variations to the surname - HILE, HYLES and HYLE. There is a database of the 1881 Census for the whole of England, Wales and Scotland. There is also another database under construction for other sources used include parish registers, probate records, street directories, manorial documents, leases, Chancery depositions, WW1 records and many others published and unpublished. The collection also has a family tree from each of the members making linking up that much easier.

The large amount of information which is held in the Hiles Collection database may enable present day bearers of the name to link up with an earlier line.

If you are interested in the study perhaps because you have a HILE(S)/HYLE(S) ancestor or some material which could be included please get in touch. The group is happy to share information and will provide as much as possible from the collection. My e-mail address is hiles@one-name.org
