| 1928 Is the year the Saint got introduced to the world in Leslie Charteris's the Saint meets the tiger novel.In 1940 the Saint was heard on british bbc radio,It was 1945 when the Saint made its debut on american radio with NBC network ,Of all the radio voices who played the famous Simon Templar ,Vincent Price became the most memorable one .In the year 1938 the first of many Saint movies were filmed ,the first being the Saint in New York by RKO radio pictures.which went on to make a good few of the early Saint films. The Saint books kept coming out by Leslie Charteris and soon the comic strips.The most collectable of the comic strips are the 12 issued by a company called Avon in the USA between 1947 and 1952. The Saint series starring Roger Moore hit the british TV screens in 1962 with the first episode called The Talented Husband.But Roger Moore was not the first choice for the part because while Leslie Charteris was writing the books he had Gary Grant the famous hollywood film star in mind for the part of Simon Templar. Another star the producers went after was Patrick Mc Goohan who was famous for his Danger Man role and later for the Prisoner,but he turned the part down so Lew Grade came up with a star called Roger Moore who had a string of TV shows under his belt including Ivanhoe & Maverick and was also on the books of Lew Grades Agencies. In all Roger Moore played the Saint for 118 episodes 71 In black & white and 47 in colour. Four of the episodes were put together to make two feature films of the Saint "The Fiction Makers"&"Vendetta for the Saint".Roger Moore went on to Direct nine of the Saint episodes and years later tried to buy the rights to the series. Robert s Baker is the man who at present owns the saint rights. The Stick man logo of the Saint which you see all around the world when items of the saint are shown was created by Leslie Charteris when he was about nine years old,he was writing a magazine at school and all the characters were drawn as stick figures,asked how he turned a stick man into a Saint? he replied " simple you put an halo on its head " . Throughout the Roger Moore era of the famous Simon Templar all sorts of television tie ins to the series cames to light from the toy volvo car to the Saint bubble gum cards,all of which are now collectable items at a price.The full set of the Saint Cards made by a company called Somportex will put you back a good £450.00 upwards in vgc. The box in which the cards came in is priceless in mint condition.
