What is Pilates?

Pilates (pronounced Puh LAH tees ) is a unique and versatile form of body conditioning and exercise. Devised by the German born Joseph Pilates, it works the body holistically in a series of mat and machine based exercises. The body is strengthened and aligned on custom built apparatus that will enable you to work with your body rather than against it.

How does it work ?

As most of the work is done lying down in an anatomically correct position, it is suitable for people from all walks of life, ages and professions. it addresses functional movement of the body, the way we walk, sit and stand as well as conditions from arthritis to sports and industrial injuries.

A strong emphasis is placed upon strengthening the abdominal muscles and balancing the weaker muscles of the body against the stronger ones.

Each session is tailored to suit the individual. You can expect to see changes in your musculature, posture alignment and joint articulation. Improvement of strength, flexibility and prevention of future injuries are also benefits of this gentle and straightforward principle.

How can it help my back problem?

When you attend a Pilates session, our teachers are trained to assess your posture and look for the imbalances within your body that may be contributing to your pain or discomfort. The teacher will then give you a series of exercises to begin the process of changing the form of the muscles so that you can become more aligned and support the skeleton. The teacher is constantly on hand to guide you through the exercises and encourage the changes that you may wish to make. We can work in conjunction with your physio, osteopath, chiropractor or health care practitioner.

Pilates works well for conditions such as prolapsed/slipped disc, scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis, degenerative back problems, osteoporosis, sciatica, athritis. Please contact your nearest practitioner to find out more.
