The seminar programme has been designed for nurses working in pain & orthopaedic clinics, hospitals or the community, district nurses, health visitors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, general practitioners and their practice staff and other professionals working in pain and orthopaedic clinics. As back pain is such a problem in industry, occupational health nurses, doctors and other staff will find great benefit.

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE SEMINAR?
The programme is designed to provide you with:

09.30-10.30: SESSION ONE (Dr J.C.D. Wells)
- · Epidemiology: understanding the scale of the back pain problem; how common is back pain? why disability from back pain is increasing; the cost and incidence of back pain; future trends.
- · Profile of the typical back pain sufferer: average age; possible factors for preponderance of one sex over the other, accidents involving backs; effects of age; pain clinic attendance.
- · Causes: soft tissues, muscles, ligaments; joint pain including arthritis, spondylitis, spondylosis; wear and tear; bony pathology, fractures, osteoporosis, cysts, spinal stenosis, tumours; nerve pain, including nerve compression, and neurological, including m.s.; disc problems; postural, psychological and psychiatric factors, x-rays and MR scans.
- · Factors influencing back pain: height, weight, smoking, pregnancy, lack of physical fitness, social class, occupation, etc
- · Back pain in the workplace: heavy lifting; twisting, job stress, healthier lifestyle, physical exercise, relaxation, site safety, disability management, promotion of return to work.

- · Psychology of back pain: influence on gender, age, culture, social factors, pain tolerance, pain expression
- · Psychology of acute/chronic pain: how chronic pain develops; depression and pain; anxiety and pain, downward spiral of pain, distress and disability, family relationships, effects on the workplace; economic influences through loss of income, reliance on benefit etc.
- · Dimensions of pain:: Physical, cognitive, affective, behavioural.
- · Psychological Assessment: use of psychometric tests, patient interview techniques.

13.15-14.15 SESSION 3 (Dr J.C.D. Wells)
- · Treatment of back pain: early mobilisation; relief of pain, reassurance, discussion of good outcome; personal responsibility of patient; active rehabilitation, medication, physiotherapy, collars, corsets, crutches etc. physical therapy, manipulation, osteopathy, chiropractic, TENS, acupuncture, aromatherapy, other alternative techniques; spinal surgery; nerve blocks, psychological techniques, rehabilitation programmes.

- · Pain Management Techniques: Use of psychology in pain management
- · Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: role of attitudes and beliefs; pain perception and behaviour; use of cognitive techniques in modifying negative thoughts; pacing, graded exercise, relaxation, value of individual and group therapy, biofeedback.

Accreditation: The seminar is accredited to the Royal College of Nursing and qualifies for 10 Continuing Education Points. A certificate is awarded and an evaluation sheet MUST be completed at the end of the seminar in order to obtain the accredited points.
THE SPEAKERS
Dr J.C.D. Wells and Dr E.J. Ghadiali were responsible for starting Britain's first pain management programme at The Walton Centre for Neurology & Neurosurgery, Liverpool in 1983. Dr Wells is a Consultant Anaesthesist and former Director of the Centre for Pain Relief, home of Europe's largest pain clinic; Dr Ghadiali is Consultant Clinical Neuro-psychologist & Director of The Walton Pain Management Programme. Both men are regarded as lively, authoritative and entertaining speakers throughout the world and demand for places is expected to be high.
