The Participants
The following are the people committed (or soon will be) to the challenge.

Some last minute changes to the personal included a change of driver and additional support people.

THE MEN

ALEX BURNSIDE (44). Alex is a BT employee and lives in Bournemouth. It will be Alex's unfortunate lot to drive an awful lot further than the rest of the team and for that he has our commiseration's but no help at all. Alex is our expert with an abundance of experience but that does not include mollycoddling the rest of us so if we can't keep up.. he'll run away and leave us.

Alex has three West Highland Way's (4 day and 6 day) to his credit and has numerous other Hillwalking experience.

STEVE FIELD (30).Steve is married with one daughter born in February this year who has already been up her first mountain. He moved to Callander last year to be nearer the hills, having been involved in climbing and mountaineering for some time now. He has climbed in the Alps and the Himalayas and has climbed the 3 highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales individually, but never attempted them all in 24 hours before. Steve met Gillian through ScottishPower at work and in the Scottishpower gym. He thinks the 3 Peaks Challenge is a good way to remember her and to raise money for a very worthy cause.

KEITH THOMSON (31). Keith is employed with CALANAIS which is the new IT subsidiary of Scottishpower. Keith has previously completed some Munroes but has not climbed Ben Nevis and sees this as a seperate challenge. His preferred challenge would be to chase a football round a fives park His friends? feel he has more chance of completing the Three Peaks than catching a football.

Keith's only problem is a tendecy to car sickness which he alleviates with drinking beer. This has the effect of rendering him unsteady on his feet which requires him to be roped to his companions in order that he will complete the walk without being lost or falling over.

VINCE (Sherpa Tensing) NOBILE (34). Vince is also employed by CALANAIS. Cadbury's Fruit and Nut features strongly in Vince's training schedule. Placing copious quantities at the end of any walk will ensure Vince completes any walk or climb. Vince has not had much practice this year, with his dog, Bob, playing an important part of Vince's one walk this year. Vince refused to let Bob's lead go and the dog dragged him home. Fortunately the walk was only round the garden.

GEORGE MUIR (34). George works as an Alarm Engineer. George's experience includes several Munroes and completion of the West Highland Way. Keith has pleaded with George to come on the challenge to look after him and Vince. George was disappointed to learn that he would not need his ski's for this event. Needs to be kept topped up with fluid to ensure completion of the event.

COLIN DOWELL (28). Colin works for Calanais doing business & technical analysis type things. Colin lives is Glasgow & knew Gillian through his work with ScottishPower on the Change 98 Programme. He's done a fair bit of walking over the years & in 1997 completed the coast to coast walk across the north of England. Now that the footie season's over - & his beloved Queen's Park have finally won promotion - he's embarked upon a vigorous training programme involving the odd swim or two, getting a haircut and catching up with his mates.

PAUL McGREEVY (32). Paul is employed with CALANAIS as a ..... coffee drinker? Paul is considered fit enough to complete the challenge. Most of Paul's past experience is in his mind and is fairly convinced he is a mountaineer of the highest order. Paul is working on short burst training at the moment. This consists of walking out to the garden and back. His wife is hopeful that he will progress soon to actually cutting the grass one of the times he is out.

PHIL MILNE ().

STEPHEN McGOVERN (37). Stephen is also employed with CALANAIS and does technical stuff with computer thingys. Stephen is concerned that his linguistic skills will not be required and would prefer that the challenge was in Spain to make use of his Spanish speaking talent. His past experience revolves round pub music quizzes and there is concern among his colleagues that swotting up on rave music is not the best training for this challenge. Stephen is more confident based on the understanding that Spanish masseurs will be available to give him a rub down at the bottom of each hill.

GEORGE MURPHY. George is a colleague of Neil Bennetts and due to the last minute nature of his entry to the team is something of an unknown factor.

THE WOMEN

CHERYL HUSTON ().

DEBORAH GILLOW ().

HELGA REID ().

THE PENSIONERS

NORMAN MONTGOMERY (50). The Author of this site and ex-BT employee now retired. Lives in Elderslie, near Paisley. Married to Margaret and has one son David who is also a participant. The side challenge here is to complete this challenge ahead of David just to prove that he can.

Veteran of one and a half West Highland Ways (first attempt abandonded due to blistered feet).

GORDON WALKER (54). Gordon is another ex BT employee. Married to Sandra with two sons Ian and Ross and daughter Katrina. Gordon lives in Neilson, near Glasgow.

Gordon is a keen cyclist and was a good amateur in his youth. Veteran of three West Highland Way (one 5 days), why anyone would want to do it more than twice would make one question Gordon's good sense.

THE BOYS

DAVID (MONTY) MONTGOMERY (24). David is a Scottishpower employee. Lives in Glasgow, and this effort is being made in memory of his partner Gillian. No real experience in this kind of thing although he did climb Ben Lomand many years ago. David's sport was Basketball at which he was very good. David was the instigator of the training schedule mapped on the associated page and after the first two now is under no illusions on the difficulty of this challenge.

JASON (WEE BARZIE) BARR (25). Jason is another BT employee and sad to say still lives with his mother in Paisley. Jason's real reason for participating is that he thinks it will give him Kudos with the 'Wummin'. A footballer of very little note there is no question over his fitness. Jason is likely to compete with Alex for first finished if he keeps up the training program.

CRAIG (ISLES) IRELAND (25). Craig is a Scotrail employee and lives with his partner Gillian in Paisley. Craig is an avid St Mirren supporter and it is fortunate for us that St Mirren won the league since involvement in play-offs would have jeopardised Craig's involvement. If Craig completes the training program there is a good chance he will beat Wee Barzie to the finish. This includes keeping him of beer between peaks which is the only thing likely to prevent him completing the challenge.

IAN ERSKINE (24). Ian is employed with One 2 One in there Customer Services department and works part time in The Tunnel nightclub as a Crowd Control Supervisor. Ian lives with his mother and father in Elderslie. Ian's experience in walking comes from walking his dog round the garden. He is very keen on working out at the gym but normally in the weight lifting department rather than in aerobic conditioning.

JAMIE THOM (26). Jaimie is self employed and also works part time in The Tunnel nightclub as an Event Entry Co-ordinator. Jaimie lives in Newlands and has recently been on a fitness drive, running at rather unusual times of the night. Jamie is usually prepared mentally and with the appropriate clothing and equipement as was shown in his attempt at the west highland way where a NYPD t-shirt and bandana were backed up with a hunting knife (just incase he needed it).

MATTHEW MORTON (25). Matthew is a student and nightclub DJ. Since he has a complete abhoration of climbing hills sees this as an even greater challenge than everyone else. Matthew was a top junior squash player and feels a little bit lost walking up hills without a racquet in his hand.

THE SUPPORT TEAM

NEIL BENNETT (). Neil claims that he cannot do the challenge because his knees are bad. Who are we to question this until he explains that it was due to his playing football. Well really everybody seems to use that excuse. Neil has volunteered to be a driver and probably has not yet realised that this is probably the hardest thing to do.

CHARLIE BARTON (). Charlie has agreed to be a last minute substitute as driver. Knowing Charlies organisational skills everthing will be properly packed and accounted for although that will not necessarily mean the people.

MARGARET MONTGOMERY (49). Margaret works for LloydsTSB. Margaret feels obliged to help since her son is involved in this, the fact that her husband is involved has in no way influenced her decision. To make sure her son gets the right amount of food and protein she has agreed to provide food and drink for the team at least at the bottom of Ben Nevis. Whether she makes the trip further remains to be seen.

ANNE McMILLAN (). Anne has willingly agreed to come along and help provide the provisions at Ben Nevis.

SUSAN BENNETT (). Susan felt that she wanted to be involved in some way and has therefore agreed to help with provisions.
