Glen Bramley writes - Chesterfield 1 -
3 Steel City A disappointing result but I can’t fault the work rate and
effort put in by the girls. We were level with about 10 minutes to go and I
think we just ran out of steam as Steelers were very strong and organised.
The Steelers manager said we were the best team they had played this season
so we can take heart from this performance. Right now for the critical bit as
we need to learn from this game and the only difference I could pick between
the teams was that Steelers were a bit more street wise and a fraction quicker
to the ball. We need to react quicker and really want the ball more. Numerous good performances to mention as Amy Calpin was brave in
goal and Pheobe Munday and Adele Bond were solid as ever. Helen Rodway played
well again but had to be substituted as she got a knock on the side of her
head and was a bit out of it for a while. Carla Allen played a captains game
leading by example and the two Chloe’s Bown and Breeze battled away to make
Steelers work for the ball. Alice Martin had another great game along with
Megan Cole who both never stopped running. Ella Bramley put in another strong
performance scrapping for every ball and making terrific runs at the Steelers
defence. Kirbi Jackson in her first season with us is getting stronger with
every game and isn’t being fazed by the increase in standard. To the game,
Steelers took the lead with a scrappy goal which crept inside the post from a
goal mouth scramble but we got back into the game and it was end to end
stuff. Second half and Ella made a good break only to see her shot bounce
back of the post. She was then rewarded for her determination by scoring with
a lovely shot over the keeper. We went looking for the winner with Kirbi throwing herself into
some thunderous sliding tackles to stop the Steelers midfield from making
ground but we didn’t have it all our own way as Phoebe stopped a shot on the
line then she threw herself at the ball to stop the next shot then again won
a 50/50 to stop Steelers scoring a second. Brooke Storey made some timely interceptions
as Steelers tried to catch us on the break as we pushed for the winner but as
we eventually ran out of steam. Steelers then scored their second from a good
finish giving Amy no chance. Tired legs didn’t clear the ball to let Steelers
in again for their third. The score line flattered Steelers a bit I thought
but they deserved the win as they took their chances well and (pardon the
pun) showed a bit more steel than us. As I said girls we can take a lot from
this game and get better so heads up and onto the next game. |
