Chirk Castle, situated near Wrexham in North Wales, is a rectangular medieval fortress. It was built by Edward I's supporter, Roger Mortimer at the end of the thirteenth century. Rectangular is shape, the castle consists of four walls with five round towers. The north wall has three towers and the main entrance gate. The west and east walls have semi-circular towers two thirds along their length. The walls of the castle remain mostly original but the interior of the castle has been altered over the years. The north, east and south walls have had extra living and working quarters built along them while the west has only rooms and corridors built into the thickness of the wall. The castle was spared destruction at the end of the English Civil War and has been lived in and maintained ever since.
