| This list shows the first 9 Princes of Wales starting with Edward II. In total there have been twenty-one
princes holding the title including Prince Charles the current holder. Edward I started
the tradition in 1301 when he gave the title to Edward his son who was born at Caernarfon
in North Wales. Usually the eldest son of the ruling monarch is given the title Prince of Wales. If the
prince then becomes King he automatically gives up the title.
