The Black Death
| 1351 | | Statute of Labourers | | | | Because so many people died from the plague, labour was a scarce resource. To prevent workers demanding their own prices, the costs were fixed for labourer's wages at the pre-plague levels. Labourers had to stay in their own villages, and had to appear before a steward or constable each year to swear to abide by the rules of the statute. Edward (The Black Prince) Edward, the Black Prince, was the eldest son of Edward III and Philippa of Hainault. The Black Prince would never become king himself as he died before his father but his son would become the next king of England as Richard II. Henry (of Grosmont, Duke of Lancaster) Henry worked for Edward III as a soldier and diplomat during the early years of the Hundred Years War. He had inherited his wealth from his father, the Earl of Lancaster. In France Henry increased his income by obtaining a licence to mint coins and through a monopoly over salt in Poitou. Balliol, Edward (King of Scotland 1332) Edward was the eldest son of John Balliol, the king of the Scots. With help from Edward III Edward Balliol claimed the Scottish throne after defeating David II at Dupplin Muir in 1332. Isabella (of France, Wife of Edward II, she-wolf of France) Daughter of Philippe IV the king of France. Isabella married Edward II of England in 1308 and their eldest son became Edward III. Isabella was unhappily married to Edward and through a rebellion in 1327 had him imprisoned and ultimately executed and so she became know as the she-wolf of France. Isab (more...)
