The ship has to be stopped close to the Pilot Cutter. Then it, in turn, closes the gap to transfer the pilot.

Even though the ship was third in convoy behind an Ice Breaker the ship was stopped by the crush of moving ice. These pictures indicate the type of forces that may be inflicted upon a ships hull by pressing ice.
These blocks of ice were formed as the ice fractured and piled up against the ship's hull.

Super Ice Class tanker "Tempera". Effectively this tanker has two bows. The normal sea bow at one end and a very efficient ice breaking bow at the other. There is no rudder, propulsion and steering is achieved with azipod propellers suspended under the hull.
