Tinker Taylor's Home Page . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Anchor down

My name is Martin, or 'Tink', to my old school friends. I am a sea-going ship's Captain, commanding oil tankers, including ULCC's (Ultra Large Crude Carriers - Supertankers) and latterly on Chemical and Product Tankers. Presently at home on leave for a couple of Months without pressure !

Having spent some 39 years in my maritime career I have had the good fortune to have navigated all around the World, visiting some 308 ports within 85 countries. It all sounds good, but as with all occupations there are both positive and negative aspects. I am lucky enough to have never been sea-sick, but occasionally get sick-of-the-sea. The milsestone 300th port of call was 'Come By Chance', Newfoundland.

Shipping Seas in the Bay of Biscay

"I have known the sea too long to believe in it's sense of decency."

That quote from Conrad is so very true as my photo vividly depicts.

I am now 57 years of age and enjoy, and indulge, in all the good things in life, some of which I should probably avoid. Good food, good wine and good female company. The latter being the most troublesome to find. After all, who wants a relationship with an 'Old Sea Dog' who is married to his ship(s), the welfare of her crew, and the Sea............

According to Samuel Johnson, "Being in a ship is being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned.". This is perhaps very true in respect of the modern mercantile industry, with small crews and rapid turn-around time in port, opportunity for shore leave is either rare or non-existent.

However, the seafarer both lives and works in one of the most challenging and, at times, hostile environments known to man.

Browse through my picture galleries to discover a tiny hint of what life at sea is all about.

I will periodically add new material from my voyages or even add more from my earlier archives. So do return to this site and/or E-mail me at mar_iner(at)btinternet.com.
