The Guitar.
The guitar still remains one
of the most popular instruments to learn and is taught in many schools all over the
country. Whilst having lessons at school will always be a good (and relatively cheap) way
of learning it cannot possibly be as effective as having one-to-one tuition with a private
teacher.

I have been playing and
teaching guitar for a number of years and I believe that it is a marvellous instrument to
launch a musical hobby as it is quite easy to learn the basics. Whatever your musical
tastes we can usually find a style and technique to suit and I usually teach a mixture of
classical, folk and rock. I started to learn the guitar at around 11 years of age and
within 12 months I could play most major, minor and seventh chords and pick out several
well known "pop" songs. By the time I was starting my teenage years I was in a
school group (as they were known then) and was entertaining audiences in school
productions.

At the age of 16, I started playing the
guitar, keyboards and accordion in clubs and pubs around Manchester and turned
professional in 1978. Then followed many years of Summer seasons, British tours and gigs
entertaining in army bases and bars on the Continent. Now that I have a family and do not
travel away from home I have the time to pass on my knowledge to other budding musicians.
I do prefer to teach the guitar to complete beginners or recent starters and believe that
you are never to old (or young) to start. I Have taught pupils from 6 to 60 and each one
has gone on to develop their own style. I include music theory in my lessons so all my
pupils can now read music. This is very helpful if you want to learn other instruments (I
also teach keyboard and piano accordion.)
