Llanfairfechan Celebration at Fed Autumn Meeting (09 Nov 09) by Tony Thomas
Federation Chairman David Barrett welcomed 32 people, representing 10 clubs, to the NWFCC Autumn Meeting at Culcheth last Saturday. He also thanked all the Officers and Coaches who have worked hard to make the 2009 a success. Treasurer Peter Wilson presented the audited accounts showing the Federation has a healthy balance of over £3,500. Concern was expressed about the change in Development Grant Procedures adopted by the CA this year which has reduced the expected allocation to the North West. Development Officer Janet Davies described the financial support given to clubs this year - Storage Shed at Southport; Lawn Mower at Penrith; Lawn levelling at Bury; Electricity supply at Chester.

Coaching Officer, Bob Burnett described the coaching activities during the year which has covered all levels of play, all croquet formats and at many locations. He thanked all the coaches and handed the role over to Ken Cooper. There followed a discussion on whether the Federation should charge members for coaching which was resolved by a majority vote that we should continue to offer free coaching.

League Manager, Tony Thomas, reported on a successful season involving 134 league matches and thanked all the team captains for efficiency in completing all fixtures and reporting results. The changes to the league rules agreed last year were all implemented without any major problems. There was a discussion on changes for season 2010 and it was agreed: (a) to continue with the Bonus Points system in the Advanced League, (b) to place time limits of 2.5 hours on Advanced Games, (c) allow captains to agree earlier start times than 10:00 if appropriate and recommend a 9:30 start in Advance Matches. These changes to be incorporated in the League Rules, available on the Fed website. It was also agreed Llanfairfechan could play their Golf League matches as 'Singles Only' when playing Away but 'Singles and Doubles' when playing at Home.

A new Disciplinary Procedure was agreed and this to be published on the Fed website. It was accepted this was a sensible procedure to adopt, so that Officers knew how to handle the very rare but potentially difficult situations that can occur.

The highlights from the Club Reports included:
(a) Bowdon - 94 playing members, new Mentor programme, Groundsman appointed, Winter croquet programme planned.
(b) Bury - Won the Longman Cup in 2009, significant levelling of lawns has had problems with weather, but expected to be ready for 2010.
(c) Chester - Membership now 86, installed new electricity supply, very active coaching programme, developing Advance team for 2010 Jamboree.
(d) Culcheth - Finished 2nd in Golf League, despite low membership have run many corporate events, now have four Golf Coaches, Winter Mat still available.
(e) Fylde - New lawn now in use, Betty Bates won the All England Handicap, have increased range of equipment.
(f) Isle of Man - Development restricted by illness of major players, lost facilities at Port St Mary due to low membership, hosting many corporate events .
(g) Liverpool - Forced to change location, low membership, will continue till next Summer to develop a Croquet facility in Liverpool.
(h) Llanfairfechan - Opened an excellent new clubhouse, won first trophy in history - Short League, membership now 88, saddened by four bereavements.
(i) Pendle - Professional Greenkeeper appointed, new lawn drainage, won Secretary's Shield and Handicap League, very active programme on lawns.
(j) Penrith & N Lakes - membership increasing slowly, purchased new Lawn Mower, brought additional lawn into use, had successful club competitions.
(k) Southport - Lawns much improved, expensive advertising generated 19 new members, new CCTV and broadband installed, new storage shed ordered.
(l) Westmorland - Membership 23, will have 2 full lawns for 2010, recruitment drive planned, with Crake Valley will play in 2010 Midweek and Handicap Leagues.

Chairman David Barrett presented Llanfairfechan Chairman, Jack Pattenden, with a CA Diploma for Services to Croquet. This was followed by presentation of league trophies to league winners: Bowdon Saints (Advanced League); Pendle & Craven (Handicap League); Bowdon Earls (Midweek League); Llanfairfechan (Short League); Southport (Golf League).

Pendle Win the Secretary's Shield (18 Oct 09) by David Pollitt
Pendle beat Ealing 5-2 in the Secretary's Shield Final at Northampton on 18 October. Teams:
Pendle: Roger Schofield (3), Andrew Webb (4.5), David Pollitt(Capt) (7) and Robin Delves (11)
Ealing: Nigel Polhill (0), Colin McKenzie (6) Suzanne Clarke (8) and Roger Mayhew (12)

Could Pendle win this competition for the first time? It needed the players to rise at 5.30 am and to leave Robin's at 7 am to arrive at Northampton before 10 o'clockstart. We made it with 15 minutes to spare. It was good to find we had support from Pendle's founder and present country member, Norman Hicks, who now lives in the Northampton area.

All the games were double banked with the lawns playing fairly fast but they were undulating. In the morning Andrew built up a good lead but his opponent decided it was time to start using her bisques, so with 1.5 bisques she took her first ball round and then eventually finished the game with 2 bisques still in the ground, without Andrew adding to his score. A player to watch! In the doubles Ealing won, so it left David to win to keep Pendle in with a chance. We ate our lunch in the open with it being such a good day. After lunch Roger set the tone with a comprehensive win using his bisques to maximum effect to win +26. David looked to be heading for 2nd win, but was finally beaten by Ealings most impressive player. So it needed Robin and Andrew to win for Pendle, to lift the shield. This they both did without much nail biting by Roger and David.

Well done Pendle and a big thank you to all the drivers especially Robin and everyone who played.

Dave Nick won the Southport September Advanced Weekend (6 Oct 09) by Ian Lines
Dave Nick beat Gail Curry +17, +4 to win the Southport September Advanced Weekend and get his name on the Sandiford Salver for the first time, bringing to an end the run of 5 consecutive years that Ian Lines has won the event. Ian won the consolation Swiss with 5/6 wins. The lawns at Southport are in good condition, thanks largely to the work that has been done on them this year, and in the sunshine today they were just fast enough (around 10 seconds) to make picking up breaks and tps a little tricky, particularly due to the slight slopes on some lawns and around some hoops, which could catch out the unwary. In addition to the glorious sunny weather, Southport provided excellent lunches and teas which all helped make for a very enjoyable weekend.

Graham Saunders(11) lost to Neil Coote(5) -10

Paul Rigge won the Heaton Park Advanced Tournament (20 Sep) by Geoff Young

At the end of Saturday Andrew Winn, Paul Rigge, Jerry Guest and Robbie Dodds were in the lead each with three wins and one defeat. On the Sunday Winn and Rigge remained the chief contenders and at the end were inseparable, leading to a shootout at the peg which Paul Rigge won at shot 7 (2-2 after five).

Paul Wiger Wins All England Regional Final (6 Sep 09) by Barbara Dutton
Fourteen players who all won their own club's internal competition, battled it out to represent the North West (which for some quirk includes Lincolnshire) at Roehampton in the All England Finals on 19th & 20th September. Saturday was a miserable day, with rain coming across the lawns in successive sheets, but the good lunch fortified the players for the afternoon session. The weather cleared in the evening and Sunday was cool but with hardly any wind and dry. Over the two days the players played against each other and finally the winner was declared as Paul Wiger from Bowdon, with Betty Bates from Fylde, Eileen Gallagher from Southport and Janice Muir from Bowdon also going forward to the finals. Francois Garcia of Bowdon was named as reserve, in case any of the others couldn't make the final. Four players won CA merit awards.

Abdul Ahmad wins 2009 Millennium Golf (23 Aug 09)
Abdul Ahmad, representing Pendle and Craven, was undefeated in all 7 matches and won the trophy. Catherine from Fylde, who had triggered down to handicap 10 in the previous day's play at Chester, came second with 5 wins, triggering a handicap of 9. Although a rainy day was forecast, 8 players were greeted in morning sunshine for a great day of Golf Croquet at Heaton Park. All played all, as the weather freshened with some short showers interspersed with sunshine. By the end of round 6, Abdul had won 6 matches and Catherine 5. The final match between the pair would decide the outcome of the tournament. The score was 5-3 in Abdul's favour at hoop 9. Abdul scored the hoop and his ball ran some way to the left of Hoop 10. Catherine sent the yellow ball to the Hoop and using the last bisque, managed to place it into the jaws. With a tremendous shot, Abdul dislodged the ball. Catherine's red ball had been sent earlier to the West boundary just in front of hoop 1. If she could miss the peg on the left there was a chance to get near to hoop 10. Disappointed at the wasted bisque with the yellow ball, she determinedly struck the ball diagonally across the lawn (just about 2 inches right of the peg) and incredibly lodged the red ball into the 10th hoop. Abdul then played his shot as Catherine walked back across the lawn. Catherine played yellow then after some confusion over ball order, Abdul smashed his blue ball from the North boundary at the red ball. The blue hit the upright and Catherine successfully ran the 10th hoop. Some minutes later, Abul ran hoop 11 taking the match 7-4.

Fed Jamboree Thrills Croquet Crowds (28 June 09) by Tony Thomas
Federation clubs can feel proud of a wonderful Croquet event this weekend. Eight clubs contested Golf, Short, Handicap and Advanced Croquet over two days of tournaments involving 228 games in glorious sunny Southport (well, apart from the odd thunder storm). The South Lawns were resplendent, demonstrating the large investment in maintenance by the Southport Club. Even the notorious North Lawns played better than ever and gained praise. As always, the catering was 'par excellence', about 150 excellent lunches being served to an appreciative gathering. It is nice to be reminded occasionally how strong croquet in the north west really is and how it binds us together in pursuit of a sport we love - the camaraderie, obvious friendships and competitive rivalry makes this event an unforgettable experience. It is estimated nearly 200 people attended over the weekend and David Barratt, Federation Chairman, thanked everyone at the Southport club for the tremendous hard work involved in organising a club championship, unique in the croquet world which demonstrates the importance of why members matter. Alan Mayne and Barry Keen managed the tournament over the two days, ably assisted by Southport members Terry Foster (organisation), Carol Lewis (Advanced), Brian Lewis (Short), Keith Roberts (Handicap) and Don Williamson (Golf). The Advanced competition was a tie between Southport and Crake Valley, resulting in a nail biting 'Peg hitting' tie breaker in front of an enthusiastic crowd of about 80 people. David Barratt presented trophies to the event winners: Southport (Advanced); Fylde (Handicap); Bowdon (Short); Bowdon (Golf); concluding with the Federation Championship for 2009 being awarded to Bowdon. As people departed in excellent spirits, the talk was how can we surpass this event next year? We will - don't miss it!

Ian Lines still Managing and Winning (07 June 09) by Barbara Dutton
The weather was balmy and the result was decisive with a 6 - 1 win for Pendle & Craven. The CA Advanced Tournament, 6th -7th June, held at Earby, brought 12 players of the highest standards from all over the country from Edgbaston and Shrewsbury to Crake and Middlesborough with players from closer to home from Southport, Bowdon, Fylde and Bury. Ian Lines from Bowdon both managed the tournament and went on to retain the David Openshaw Trophy as overall winner. Dave 'Nick' Nicholson from Crake won the Chris Hudson Trophy for the fastest game in a blistering 35 minutes. Lee Hartley from Fylde won the A class gaining the Chris Clarke Trophy and Liz Wilson also from Fylde won the B Class Jeremy Dyer Trophy. Day one was miserable, cold and wet but in spite of this the lawns played well. Day two saw better weather for the final day.

Opening Day at Llanfairfechan & North Wales Croquet Club (20 May 09) by Jack Pattenden
On 20th May 2009 in front of an enthusiastic crowd of almost ninety people was staged the final act of our three year project with the opening by Councillor Glyn Jones Chairman of Conwy County Borough Council of our new Clubhouse. The building looked magnificent with its off-white walls and Welsh slate roof decorated by a garland of bunting in Croquet colours. The final landscaping of the lawns and garden with the mountains rearing behind added hugely to the picture.

The ceremony was preceded by lunch in the clubhouse to which representatives of our principal backers were invited which enabled the Chairman to thank each one on behalf of the club for their support which had made the building possible. Before sitting down to dine Councillor Jones unveiled a plaque on the wall commemorating all those bodies and persons who had supported the project.

At 2.00pm we moved outside for the opening ceremony in front of another seventy guests - club members, dignitaries from local councils, members of other clubs in the North West Fed., members of local groups and schools who use the lawns during the summer and individual members of the North Wales community. It was an opportunity for the Chairman to extend thanks to everyone who by their contributions had added so significantly to the money raised to cover the cost of the project.

Councillor Jones was fulsome in his praise for the hard work undertaken to make the project a success and declared the building open by cutting the tape across the patio doors.

This was not quite the end of the ceremony as Barry Keen, representing the Croquet Association, to the delight of members , presented the Chairman with the Townsend Award for the most improved club in the form of a Cup, an Award and a cheque for £250!

Tea and refreshments were served at 3.00pm and all present were invited to enjoy a game on the lawns which many took advantage of.

The event was well covered by the media. It started with a Radio interview on Tuesday afternoon and BBC, ITV and S4C all had cameras and reporters there on the day. Interviews appeared on the respective news channels in the early evening. The local papers will run pictures and reports and a special media representative was sent by the Welsh Assembly to ensure that maximum coverage should be achieved throughout the Welsh Media. This can only be good for the future of Welsh Croquet and croquet in general.

Secretary's Shield - Somewhere Under the Rainbow (19 May 09) by Barbara Dutton
Two teams competed at Earby for the opening round of the Secretary Shield. The home team of David Pollitt, Robin Delves, Peter Dewhurst and Andrew Webb took on the all ladies team from Huddersfield Syngenta. The doubles in the morning were played in fair weather and Pendle came out 2 -1 winners. After lunch the rain was fairly persistent making the lawns very wet for accurate play, however the home team took a 3 -1 victory in the singles and so came out overall winners 5 - 2 and progress to the next round. With the dark skies to the right and sunshine to the left we had a lovely low rainbow as distraction.

Patrick Cheyne Wins Millenium Handicap (17 May 09)
Patrick Cheyne from Bowdon won the the North West Federation of Croquet Clubs Millennium Handicap Tournament at Chester last weekend. He is seen here receiving the trophy from Janet Davies and Chester club member and tournament manager Elmyr Hughes. The runner up was David Boyd from Chester. Needless to say, the weather was quite horrid at times!

Advanced Pendle Trophy Goes West (17 May 09) by Barbara Dutton and Peter Wilson
The CA Advanced 'B' Level Tournament took place on the John Beech Lawns at Earby over the wekend of 16th/17th May. This tournament drew competitors from clubs in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Tyneside, Crake Valley, Fylde, Southport, Guildford, Newport, Tunbridge Wells, Edgbaston, Shrewsbury, Liverpool and Pendle. Heavy rain preceded the start of the tournament preventing a final mowing and conditions were heavy for the first game but improved throughout the tournament as spells of sunshine warmed them. Special mention must go to Roger Schofield for his efforts in preparing the five lawns needed with freshly set hoops. He would later go on to run 2-back from about 10 feet East of the peg. A beautiful shot that took some wire.

Managed by Liz Wilson, the tournament was run Flexible Swiss style with players playing as much or as little as they wished and the winner determined on the percentage of games won. Lee Hartley was able to defend his trophy despite a recent handicap reduction to scratch by virtue of the entry conditions. Mike Porter took the lead in the second round by beating Lee. This prompted Lee to set off like a Hare to play as many games as he could in an effort to reduce the percentage loss and he eventually reached 6/7 (85.7%) which would have been enough to win the tournament had Mike Porter from Newport not won his last game giving him 5/5 (100%) and the trophy in an Aesop's Fable sort of way.

Despite having to don the wetsuits and then strip off to shirt sleeves every half an hour everybody did report they were enjoying the tournament, the venue, the bar and the hospitality of the catering teams who provided elevenses, lunch and tea on both days. There were three handicap reductions: Mike Porter to 1, Andrew Webb to 4.5 and Mark Godfrey to 5. CA Gold Merit Award to Lee Hartley on Sunday for beating third place finisher Alan Mayne with his first Triple Peel.

111th Peels at Southport (11 May 09)
The 2009 Peels players experienced everything at Southport last week (7-10 May) - Thursday required libreral doses of suncream, Friday winds almost blew players away, Saturday required wet gear and Sunday weather was almost boring with grey skies. However, the lawns looked superb, the croquet very competitive and as always, catering excellent. The most ornate trophies in the croquet world went to: Liz Maltby and Nigel Graves (Mixed Doubles); Abdul Ahmad (Mens Singles); Amanda Hames Keward (Ladies Singles).

Keith Aiton beat Ian Lines to win the Jubilee Tankard, 25 years after he last won it. David Walters won the Consolation Swiss. The Golf Croquet Tournament, a non CA event, took place over Saturday and Sunday 18/19th April. Saturday was bright and sunny, but with the bitterly cold wind to contend with. Ten competitors took part, playing singles, all against all on the Saturday and then on Sunday doubles with the top 5 partnering the 5 lower scoring players from the singles. In the singles competition, Trevor Wood from Ilkley was First, Martin Wroughton from Ashby de-la-Zouche was second and Geoff Whitaker from Pendle was Third. In the doubles: David Harkness (Ilkley) with Martin Wroughton(Ashby) were First, Jan McLardy (Pendle) with Trevor Wood (Ilkley) were Second, Dawn Speer and Geoff Whitaker both Pendle were Third and Maureen Whitaker (Pendle) and Hugh Armitage (Pendle & Ilkley) were Fourth. The "Flying Circus" Returns - Bob Burnett (20/02/09)
At a recent officers meeting of the Federation it was decided to re-introduce the idea of the coaching “Flying Circus”. You may remember, this was originally instigated by Neil Williams a number of years ago and was intended to take the coaches and coaching to the various clubs within the Federation. Clubs were able to identify areas and standards of play within their own clubs that would benefit most from coaching by the Federation Coaches. It proved very successful.

A number of Coach Qualification Courses have been run over recent years and so most clubs have at least a Club Coach on their books who is able to deal with people new to the game. The Flying Circus will provide a coach, of the appropriate level of expertise and experience, to move your players on by coming to your club and running a full day course.

Please refer to the FIXTURES BOOK pages 108- 109 for the complete details of which level is required by your members -- from 'Improvers (with Handicaps '18 to 21 )--right through to Gold level-- WE CAN DO IT !

The intention is to visit every club within the Federation during the 2009 season. In order to plan the programme we need to know the level required, the numbers involved and the dates when your members and lawns are available. We plan to publish the dates of courses on the NWFCC web site and make them open to all members of the Federation to attend. This will ensure that all players have the chance to attend a course of the level they require even if their own club is concentrating on a different standard of play. The Federation will fund the course and so there is no cost to the club (other than providing the coach with lunch).

Courses and venues already identified are:
Southport GOLD 28th March (Advance coaching for experienced players, handicaps below 4) - Bob Burnett, Ian Lines & James Hawkins.
Chester SILVER GILT Mon 18 May (Experienced players with handicap 4-8) - Christine Irwin & Don Williamson.
Fylde SILVER 3rd May (Experienced players with handicaps 8-11) - Ken Cooper & Ray Lowe.
Culcheth GOLF & SHORT Tue 12 May - David Barrett
