East Midlands U17 Championship Final:
Bedford Blues 7 Towcestrians 36
Tows outclassed the Bedford Blues Academy to win the 12 a-side U17 Championship with a display of open, running rugby that produced six tries, with a further three disallowed. After containing early Bedford possession from the kick-off, the Tows Pack established the dominance that they held throughout the game. Tows took the lead after 15 mins when turnover ball from a ruck on halfway was spun wide where Full Back Rob Honeysett broke the line to send Centre Marc Yeates down the wing on the overlap. Yeates outpaced the defence over 40m to touch down in the corner.
The committed, heavy tackling from Tows meant that Bedford frequently spilt the ball in contact, and 5 mins later Tows sent the ball through 8 pairs of hands and three phases of play to put Fly Half Austin
Wheldon over from 25m. Bedford had no answer to the excellent Tows Line-Out, and the final try of the half came when another Bedford throw was stolen. No.8 Tom George broke from his own 22m to make 20m before passing to Lock Graeme Williams. Taking the ball on the burst, Williams made another 30m up the middle before sending a long pass out to the wing where Wheldon drew the defence and slipped the ball to Centre Adam Jones-Hayes. Last ditch tackling from Bedford held the ball up over the line, but Tows drove in again from the resulting scrum and send Prop Tim Toft crashing over for the first of his three tries.
Having turned round 15-0 ahead, Tows increased the intensity of tackling and rucking, and the Tows backs played with an intelligence and pace that ran the Bedford cover ragged. The continuous pressure led to many Bedford handling errors, and 5 mins into the second half Tows were awarded a 5m scrum. George drove for the line from the back to set the ruck where the ball was popped to Toft to cross for 22 - 0. Bedford continued to battle, but by this stage Tows were in complete control. A superb 4 phase passage saw the ball moved to each wing twice, leaving the defence so stretched that Toft completed his hat trick under the posts unopposed. Tows sixth try came from another 5m scrum in the Bedford 22m. The ball was spun to Wheldon who placed his kick to the corner with perfection for Wing Jamie King to collect the ball on the full and touch down. The final play of the match saw an excellent individual score by the Bedford Wing from 50m, however this was an emphatic victory for the Tows which ensured they finished the Championship undefeated.
