Funding the new Church

John Nicholls brought great energy to his new task, and a genius for getting things done. A former Publicity Officer (for the government of Bermuda) he maintained a vast array of contacts with influential and famous friends who could be persuaded to turn up and help. He set energetically about starting a Building Fund. The projected cost for the new church was £40,000 - a massive sum for the time - though in fact the Diocese and Church Commissioners provided most of it (£27,500) leaving the parish to raise a difficult but more manageable £12,500 towards the provision of Organ, Pews, and general furnishings. The Appeal was launched on October 29th. 1956, by a well known T.V. personality, Lady Isobel Barnett. Soon almost everyone in the area - including many folk from other parishes and churches, found themselves saving the price of a packet of cigarettes a week to build the new church....
