Funding the new Church
John Nicholls brought
great energy to his new task, and a genius for getting things
done. A former Publicity Officer (for the government of Bermuda)
he maintained a vast array of contacts with influential and famous
friends who could be persuaded to turn up and help. He set energetically
about starting a Building Fund. The projected cost for the new
church was £40,000 - a massive sum for the time - though
in fact the Diocese and Church Commissioners provided most of
it (£27,500) leaving the parish to raise a difficult but
more manageable £12,500 towards the provision of Organ,
Pews, and general furnishings. The Appeal was launched on October
29th. 1956, by a well known T.V. personality, Lady Isobel Barnett.
Soon almost everyone in the area - including many folk from other
parishes and churches, found themselves saving the price of a
packet of cigarettes a week to build the new church....
