Autumn Colour
All leaf etc colours mentioned on this page refer to autumn colouring.
Trees for autumn colour
This page only refers to the planting in & around the little copse.
Having planted the basic little copse the more expensive trees were planted one by
one over a few years. As these and the initial planting were spaced at
roughly 2-3m separations, they will have to be thinned starting in about 2005. They would
have needed thinning earlier, but I've lifted the crowns by removing low branches to allow us
to walk underneath.
The trees planted are:
- Sweetgums- Liquidambar styraciflua sp & var 'Worplesdon'. English weather
confuses the species- they leaf out at inappropriate moments & regret it, but Worplesdon
seems better. Orange, purple, & (esp Worplesdon) flame-red leaves.
- Juneberries- Amelanchier lamarkii are lovely in flower. Orange leaves.
- Blackgum- Nyssa sylvatica Bright yellow & orange leaves.
- Scarlet Oak- Quercus coccinea var Splendens- Moley kept undermining it,
which may be why it was slow to grow for 3 years. Dappled scarlet leaves.
- Rowans:
- Sorbus commixta Orange berries
- S. asplenifolia? Red berries
- S. hupehensis White/ pink berries
- S. cashmiriana? White berries
- S.'Joseph Rock' Yellow berries
- Katsura Cercidiphyllum japonicum Planted Sep 2000. May not like the dry conditions here.
- Stagshorn sumach- Rhus typhina is too exotic looking really, but it slipped in. Crimson leaves.
- Flowering dogwood- Cornus kousa chinensis is also too exotic looking, particularly when it
flowers, as it did for the first time in June 2000. Often looks a bit sad in the dry. I hope that the
increasing shelter from the other trees will perk it up. Dark reddish leaves.
- Maples:(3rd & 4th attempts- the first two died)
- Trident maple- Acer buergeranum Red/ orange leaves.
- Japanese maple- A. japonicum 'Osakazuki'. Scarlet leaves.
Shrubs for (mainly) autumn colour These are largely planted as a fringe around the little copse.
- Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion' Violet berries, red & orange leaves
- Spindleberries Euonymous europaeus var?? Scarlet leaves, scarlet berries, orange seeds
- Dogwoods
- Cornus alba 'Sibirica' Crimson shoots
- Common dogwood Cornus sanguinea Reddish shoots, dark red leaves
- Snowberry
- Symphoricarpus x chenaultii pink berries
- Symphoricarpus x doorenbosii pink/red berries
- Symphoricarpus 'White Hedge' white berries
- Field Maple Acer campestre Yellow leaves
