Nantmawr

The village of Nantmawr is situated about 4 miles from Oswestry on an unclassified road which runs through Trefonen and Treflach and descends down the side of the Moelydd into the valley of Nant Brook. It was once a thriving village based on Nantmawr Quarry and local farming with several shops, a post office, chapel, school and regular bus services. Now, Nantmawr has no services now other than a phone box and a school bus which operates in term time only.

Nantmawr is not a parish but is split between Trefonen and Llanyblodwel parishes. In fact the boundary runs down the middle of Nantmawr Bank!

The village can however lay claim to 2 items of environmental merit. It is situated on Offa’s Dyke Path and it possesses a nature reserve managed by Shropshire Wildlife Trust called Jones Rough. There are also plans to re-open the Nantmawr Branch rail line into the lower site of Nantmawr Quarry. Restoration work is currently being carried out by the Cambrian Railways Society.

Nantmawr also has a hidden history.

Also, before Nantmawr Independent Chapel and School were built in 1875, Nantmawr had the Smyrna Chapel
