                 Trefonen Wildlife Group.

The Trefonen Wildlife Group was recently established in order to focus on the flora and fauna of Trefonen Playing Fields. The group is an opportunity for local people to get involved in the decisions and work that will affect the wildlife of the site. Initial site visits have highlighted that we need to manage the woodland around the back of the pit mound, creating native wildflower glades, improve footpaths and steps, improve the grassland management on the mound and in neighbouring field corners to enhance biodiversity. We would also like to plant some more trees and also lay the hedge along the eastern boundary. The school has also expressed an interest to get involved so we shall be devising a project that they can take ownership of.

One issue I would like feedback on is that we are considering cutting back a lot of the hawthorn shrubs along the football pitch side of the mound and managing the resultant grassland for wildflowers. Obviously this will have a significant visual impact but will ultimately result in a return to how the mound looked in the past.  For more details and any thoughts, or if you would like to get involved with the Wildlife Group, please contact; Shaun Burkey, Conservation & Community Officer, Shropshire Council on 01691 624448, or email; shaun.burkey@shropshire.gov.uk

Meanwhile, much work is being done on grant applications to raise the money needed for the planned improvements to the Village Hall and implementation of the Playing Field developments.  There is a new fund-raising group, working to support both the Hall and Field.

Please give us a call if you can help in any way or want further information.
