4/3/00: Ryman League Division Three

Hertford Town 0 Tring Town 2

Tring bounced back from last week's disappointing defeat with an impressive away win at Hertford Town. A goal in each half was enough for Tring to register their first league double of the season.

Hertford are now managed by Graham Roberts, and he has used his contacts to bring in a number of new players, including former Watford star Steve Terry, who was a big-name signing for Hemel Hempstead earlier in the season.

The early exchanges were scrappy, not helped by a referee who was unwilling to let the game flow. The first chance of the game fell to Tring on 13 minutes. Anthony Beamish got on the end of a Marcus Davis corner with a header which was parried by the keeper. The rebound fell to Rob McKane, but his effort was cleared off the line. Another chance fell to McKane on 32 minutes when a poor defensive header left him clean through, but his shot was deflected wide by the keeper's outstretched leg.

Tring took a deserved lead on 38 minutes, as a result of the persistance of Marcus Davis. He received a cross from James Armstrong at the far post and had two efforts blocked by a defender, but despite being flat on his backside managed to connect with the ball a third time and this time it was heading into the net.

Hertford often had Tring under pressure in the second half, but Tring defended solidly and frequently looked threatening on the break. The second goal arrived nine minutes after the restart. From a short corner routine, Fergus Nevin exchanged passes with Davis before delivering a dangerous ball across the face of the Hertford goal. McKane just failed to connect but Anthony Beamish followed up behind to fire home the goal that gave Tring an extra cushion.

For all their pressure, Hertford created little to threaten the Tring goal, and it looked more likely that Tring would score another from one of their many counter-attacks. The closest they came, though, was on 68 minutes when Armstrong's curling shot from the angle of the penalty box brought a good save out of the keeper. Tring held on comfortably to move a couple of places further up the league.
