29/4/00: Ryman League Division Three

Kingsbury Town 0 Tring Town 2

Before this match, Tring had played nine games without a win, which hardly did justice to some of the football they had played in that period. However, two second half goals ended that bleak run and gave Tring hope of finishing outside the bottom six of Division Three.

The first half did not see a great deal of goalmouth action, and in fact the two best chances fell to the home side. On 36 minutes the left side of the Tring defence was exposed by a pass that put Charles Antwi through on goal, but the post kept out Antwi's fierce shot. A minute later Tring were caught napping by a quickly-taken free kick, and Alistair Joslin had to save a close-range shot from Paul Moran. Tring's best effort came on the stroke of half-time when Rob McKane worked some space inside the area for a shot which the keeper did well to save.

The second half continued with chances falling sporadically to both sides. On 48 minutes Tony Oliver's corner was met by Steve Boad with a glancing header at the near post, but the keeper saved. On 65 minutes Kingsbury's Ryan Fitzsimon missed a sitter when a cross found him unmarked at the far post, and the same player shot over the bar when clean through a minute later.

On 72 minutes Tring won a corner when the keeper tipped over a decent shot from Oliver. From the corner Kingsbury were unable to clear, and Sean Sangster stuck out a boot to put the loose ball over the line and make the breakthrough for Tring.

Five minutes from time Oliver was brought down inside the box by a challenge from Kingsbury defender Mark Burgess. The referee pointed straight to the spot, and Neal Bartlett tucked the penalty away into the corner of the net to seal the victory for Tring.
