19/9/00: FA Cup 1st qualifying round replay

Tring Town (1) 3 Ely City (1) 2 (aet 90 mins 1-1)
(Kinsley 22, 105, 107) (Baker 37, Saberton 118)

Tring booked themselves a Second Qualifying Round tie at Premier Division side Harrow Borough on Saturday week with another thrilling extra time win in last night's match. Alex Kinsley was Tring's hero, with the 19-year old scoring his first ever senior hat-trick.

Doubts over the state of the pitch led to Ely setting off late, and the match did not kick off until 8.15 pm. It was Tring who made the first breakthrough, going in front on 22 minutes. Sean Sangster made a run from the halfway line to the edge of the penalty area before laying the ball off to Kinsley, who struck a tremendous shot which left the keeper grasping thin air as the ball flew into the net. However, the visitors hit back with an even better goal on 37 minutes, Mark Baker striking a thunderbolt from 20 yards which left Billy Davies with no chance.

This match was as evenly-contested as the first meeting, and the second half continued in the same fashion. Tring came closest on 77 minutes when Kinsley's corner was headed off the line by a defender, and Tring had to clear off their own line during a goalmouth scramble in the dying minutes.

Tring went into extra time for the second successive round, and the deadlock continued until the last minutes of the first period. Scott Walters crossed to the far post, where Mike Hemingway put the ball back across goal for Kinsley to knock home his second from close range. Two minutes into the second period Kinsley was on hand again to poach his third from just outside the six-yard box, and it looked as though Tring had finally killed off the tie. However, two minutes from the end an inexplicable mix-up between goalkeeper and defender allowed Greg Saberton to nip in and head a goal back for Ely, and Tring had to endure a very tense few minutes before the referee finally blew up and confirmed their passage into the next round.
