24/4/01: Ryman League Division Three

Tring Town 1 Kingsbury Town 1

Tring broke their losing streak, but will be disappointed to have only gained a point from a game in which they were well on top for long periods and had several good chances.

In fact Tring had enough chances to have won the game within the opening half-hour. On 6 minutes Alex Kinsley was set free down the right by Neal Bartlett's pass, and Kinsley's cross was met with a header by Mark Burfoot which came back off the crossbar. On 12 minutes Brian Johnson's header from a corner was cleared off the line by a defender. Two minutes later Tring did finally get the ball in the net. Kinsley delivered another excellent cross from the bye-line, and James Armstrong was on hand in the six-yard box to shoot home.

The lead should have been doubled on 23 minutes when Armstrong's pass put Burfoot clean through, however Burfoot lacked composure and his shot went way over the bar. Instead Tring were pulled back to level terms on 35 minutes from the visitors first real threat of the game. The cross from the Kingsbury right should have been cleared, but wasn't, and Ben Porter pounced on the loose ball to shoot home the equaliser. Within two minutes Tring could have been behind when they were caught out by a long clearance from the Kingsbury box that put Charlie Antwi clean through, however Antwi's finishing was no better than Tring's as he also shot over the bar.

The second half was more evenly contested, but it was Tring who had the better chances to win the game. On 76 minutes Tring tried to take advantage of the Kingsbury keeper being stranded outside his area by playing a quick ball through to Armstrong, and although Armstrong seemed to lose control several times under challenges from defenders, he eventually got his shot away but put it wide. Two minutes from time Steve Harrhy beat a defender on the edge of the box before pulling the ball back into the danger zone, but Tony Cook's shot was blocked on the line, and Scott Walters could not force the rebound home.

Tring finished the game as the better side but ultimately could not get the goal that would have given them all three points.
