12/1/02: Ryman League Division Three
| Camberley Town (0) 1 | Tring Town (1) 2 |
| (Williams 53) | (Butler 30, Underwood 81) |
The performance didn't compare with Tuesday night's against Corinthian Casuals, but Tring did just enough to claim their second win of the week, and their first league double of the season, which lifts them up to 13th place in the Division Three table.
Tring manager Howard Cowley commented: "After our excellent result against Casuals, Camberley away was always going to be a difficult game. It was one of those days when the result was more important than the performance; we certainly worked hard to get it,even though our passing lacked quality. We will continue to build on this."
Tring, fielding an unchanged side from Tuesday night, were by far the better side in the first half, and squandered a chance to take the lead in the 7th minute. From a long throw, the referee adjudged that Dave Butler had been pushed over in the box by a defender, and awarded a penalty. However, Alex Kinsley blasted the spot-kick over the bar, thus completing a unique double - he also missed a penalty in the first match against Camberley.
On 16 minutes Tring went close again when Butler turned and shot from close range but keeper Steve Jeatt saved, and also kept out a follow up effort from Lee Johnson. Camberley's only chance of the half arrived two minutes later when Peter Millington-Lee crossed and Ian Jopling should have done better than head straight into the arms of Simon Bartley.
Tring's opening goal came on the half-hour. Ben Chesters' pass put Butler clean through, and he clipped the ball over the advancing keeper into the corner of the net for his fourth goal of the season. The lead should have been doubled five minutes later when Mark Underwood crossed to the far post, but Chesters headed over the bar from close range.
Tring didn't play nearly as well in the second half, and allowed the home side to draw level on 53 minutes. A strong run by Chris Shearer set up a chance for Nick Williams, and he lobbed the ball over Bartley for an equaliser from only their second chance of the match.
The match became very scrappy after that, and Tring seemed to be lacking the inspiration to create the necessary chances to regain their lead. However, fortune was on their side nine minutes from time. They were awarded a corner which was questionable, as the ball seemed to have come last off Johnson. Tring weren't complaining, though, and Underwood struck a viciously curling corner towards the far post. Jeatt realised too late that the ball was heading directly for the top corner, and could only help the ball into the net as Underwood celebrated his fifth goal of the season.
Tring were rarely in danger of losing their lead a second time, and should have added a third in the closing minutes as Kinsley's pass left Chesters with only the keeper to beat, however Jeatt saved Chesters' shot and his follow-up effort from the rebound.
