20/4/02: Ryman League Division Three

Kingsbury Town (0) 0 Tring Town (1) 1
  (Kinsley 41)

Tring got back to winning ways with a result which still leaves them in with a chance of an 8th place finish next Saturday. This was their final away match of the season, and Tring remained unbeaten over their last ten away matches.

Tring boss Howard Cowley commented: "We have remained unbeaten away from home since the end of December, conceding only 7 goals in the last 4 months of the season - a fantastic achievement. Roy Butler's influence as coach has been immense, and the whole squad have worked hard to remain very difficult to beat. The last game of the season - against Hertford - will determine who finishes in the top 8 , and I am sure our players will want to win it "

The match had an end-of-season feel about it, with neither side creating many clear-cut chances, but Tring were just about good value for the win in the end. Tring had an early chance in the 6th minute when Dave Butler's pass put Alex Kinsley in with a run on goal, but Kinsley's eventual shot was turned round the post by the keeper. In general, though, Kingsbury had the better of the early stages, without seriously troubling Simon Bartley.

Towards the end of the half Tring began to put some pressure on, and were rewarded with a nicely-worked goal in the 41st minute. Neal Bartlett's long pass put Butler away down the left, and Butler beat a defender before crossing to the far post. Scott Walters hooked the ball back across the face of goal where Kinsley was on hand to finish from close range for his 19th goal of the season.

The second half continued in a similar vein, with Kinsley having another chance on 55 minutes when Butler nodded Mark Underwood's pass into his path, but Kinsley volleyed over the bar. Two minutes later Kingsbury had their best effort of the game when Joel Sapiro intercepted a loose pass and broke away, but Bartley was able to save his eventual shot.

Five minutes from time Ben Chesters broke away on a solo run but had his shot saved, and soon after Butler tried to take the ball around the keeper but was forced wide. In injury time Chesters broke away again, and could have pulled the ball back for any of three players coming in at the far post, but chose to shoot again and was denied by another good save.

Team: Bartley, Underwood, Barber, Bartlett, L.Johnson, C.Gibson, Chesters, Walters (Oliver), Butler, Kinsley, Beamish.
