Saturday 17th August 2002 Ryman League Division Two
Tring Town (2) 2 (Hall 10, 30)
Witham Town (0) 1 (Walkin 90)
At Pendley Sports Centre, Tring
Tring got their Ryman Division Two campaign off to a winning start, as a first half double from Jamie Hall was enough to overcome Witham Town. Tring's team featured only five of last season's regulars, but the new players were impressive, particularly the central defensive partnership of Rob Woolfrey and Leon Hibbert who were playing together for the first time.

Tring made a positive start and were ahead after only 10 minutes. As the Witham keeper Ed Wootton tried to collect a long throw, he was put under pressure by Sean Sangster, and the loose ball dropped for Jamie Hall who struck a first time shot into the net.

A mistake by Woolfrey on 17 minutes allowed Witham's Richard Blackery to go clean through, but Tring keeper David Clark came off his line to save well, and pulled off another good save from Ben Bartlett's snap shot a minute later. There was a blow for Tring when Mike Hemmingway left the game with an ankle injury, but they continued to play well. On 24 minutes Kevin Chakaodza and Alex Kinsley both had shots blocked by Wootton. On 30 minutes Gary Clark swung over a corner, which was headed up in the air by a defender. As the ball came down, Hall was again the quickest to react, and scored a second opportunist goal with a first time shot.

On 33 minutes Chakaodza slipped a shot just wide of the post, and on 37 minutes any one of several players could have scored in a goalmouth scramble following a corner, but Tring were good value for their 2-0 half time lead.

The pace of the game was slower in the second half as the sweltering heat took its toll. Tring were unable to pass the ball as well as they had in the first half, but they still worked hard. Witham had more of the ball but didn't create many clear-cut chances. On 54 minutes Ian Kershaw rose unmarked at a corner but didn't get enough purchase on his header to divert it inside the far post, and Tom Downer headed just wide at the far post on 73 minutes. From a rare Tring corner on 76 minutes Hall just missed out on a hat-trick when his near-post header flew inches over the bar.

There was a late glimmer of hope for Witham when they pulled a goal back in injury time. Clark's attempted clearance was blocked and Tony Walkin turned the loose ball into the net, but Tring held on through the remainder of stoppage time to claim a deserved three points.
