| Tring produced a
magnificent second-half display to overturn a
half-time deficit and defeat a full-strength
Berkhamsted Town side. This win over their
neighbours sends them into the semi-finals of the
Herts Charity Cup where they will be at home to
Boreham Wood or Bishop's Stortford. Tring could hardly have
got off to a worse start, as they were behind
within two minutes, John Richardson heading home
a cross from close range, and for much of the
first half they struggled to get a foothold on
the game, rarely getting out of their own half.
Tring's best effort came on 21 minutes when Alex
Kinsley beat the offside trap but his shot from a
narrow angle was saved by keeper Nicky Webb.
Tring keeper David Clark had to dive full-length
to turn away a shot from Andy Mullins on 32
minutes, and Ricky Levenston cleared off the line
in the final minute of the half as Tring did well
to get to the interval still only a goal down.
The second half
was a different story. Tring were having as much,
if not more possession than their opponents, and
Wayne Barber's dazzling solo run on 53 minutes,
culminating in a shot which Webb did well to turn
round the post, was a sign of what was to come.
If Tring needed
more encouragement, they got it on the hour mark
when they were gifted an equaliser. Berko keeper
Webb and defender Graham Hall were too casual
playing the ball to each other on the edge of the
penalty area.. Tring's Jamie Hall spotted his
chance and got his boot to the ball - the two
Berko players could only watch as it rolled over
the line.
A well-struck
volley from Kinsley three minutes later was just
wide of the far post, but on 70 minutes the
turnaround was complete. Tring sub Mike
Hemmingway's threaded pass put Steve Groves clean
through, and Groves kept his cool as he ran on to
finish superbly, slotting the ball past Webb to
put Tring in the lead.
The game could
have been over two minutes later had Kinsley's
ferocious volley from six yards been inches
lower, but as it was Berko posed little threat to
the Tring goal over the closing minutes, and
Clark never looked likely to be beaten. It was
Tring who went closest to another goal, a volley
from Barber in injury time skimming the top of
the crossbar, just before they were able to
celebrate a very well-deserved result.
