Tring crashed out of the
Bryco Cup at the first hurdle, finishing with ten
men on a night to forget at Merland Rise. Manager
Howard Cowley made several changes from
Saturday's side, including the introduction of
new signing Lee Praser, but this was a backward
step after Saturday's performance, and against a
better finishing side Tring could have been
punished with a heavy defeat.
Tring actually started the game brightly, and had
the first effort of the game in the second
minute, Ceri Marshman's dipping shot going just
over the bar. Tring had another good chance on 11
minutes when Praser's cross to the far post for
Kinsley set up a shooting opportunity for Andy
Sissons, but his shot was turned away by the
keeper.
However, Banstead began to take control of the
game midway through the half. On 18 minutes Tring
keeper Mark Whittamore had to scramble back to
save a shot from Aaron Smith after a poor
clearance had left him stranded out of his goal.
Three minutes later Whittamore had to save again
when James Greenaway got in behind the Tring
defence and hit an angled shot, and soon after
Greenaway headed over the bar from close range
with the whole of the goal to aim at. The rest of
the first half saw Tring unable to keep the ball
out of their own half for any length of time, and
it was only Banstead's wastefulness in front of
goal that kept the game scoreless at half time.
There was no improvement in the Tring performance
in the second half, and Banstead finally broke
the deadlock on 51 minutes when Barry Langford
crossed to the far post for Marcel Dennis to rise
unchallenged and head home.
Tring continued to squander possession, but held
out until the 69th minute when Paul Turner was
penalised for a handball inside his own penalty
area. David Moore converted the spot kick to put
the game out of Tring's reach. Three minutes
later Turner's misery was complete when he was
shown a straight red card for a high tackle. The
referee was barely able to keep control of the
game as several other players were booked over
the closing minutes, and Tring seldom looked like
getting back into the game. |
