Tring's hopes of
qualifying for the quarter-finals of this
competition took a nosedive after their third
defeat in four group games. This was a game of
few chances that will not live long in the
memory.
Cheshunt, who are runaway leaders of Division
Two, rested many of their first team players for
this game, but still had enough to keep Tring
penned in their half right from the kick-off. The
opening goal arrived on 11 minutes and was not
unexpected. Tring keeper David Clark came out of
his goal to clear a through ball but changed his
mind half way, leaving him in no-man's land when
Cheshunt's Darren Spink got to the ball first and
scored with an easy lob.
Tring's best chance of the night came on 16
minutes when Alex Kinsley floated an inviting
free kick to the far post but Gary Lawson headed
wide. Cheshunt keeper David Lovell had little to
do, but his night ended early when he sustained a
knee injury just before half time.
Outfield player Matt Allen replaced him in goal,
but Allen's goalkeeping skills were rarely tested
during a second half in which Tring were still
unable to hold possession of the ball long enough
to create any pressure, and overall this was a
performance lacking in passion and commitment.
Cheshunt had chances early in the second half,
but didn't increase their lead until 84 minutes
when Panni Panayiotou got on the end of a cross
from the bye-line to score from close range, and
a minte from time Spink ran through unchallenged
to score his second and Cheshunt's third of the
night. |
