There was more
disappointment for Tring as a succession of
missed chances led to their third successive
defeat, this time at bottom club Chalfont St
Peter.
Tring dominated the game from the outset and had
three near misses in the first half. On 9 minutes
Jack Copson floated in a free kick from long
range. Dave Butler got in behind the Chalfont
defence to connect but his header was well saved
by the keeper. On 18 minutes Alex Kinsley sent
over a fine cross from the left. Butler nipped in
between two defenders but his stabbed shot came
back off the post. Kinsley was involved again on
27 minutes when he curled in a superb free kick
from just outside the box, but Steve Groves
somehow failed to connect with a header that
would have been a certain goal. At the other end,
Tring keeper David Clark scarcely touched the
ball during the first half.
The second half continued in the same vein,
virtually one-way traffic towards the Chalfont
goal. Another chance was spurned on 53 minutes.
Wayne Barber's pass put Kinsley in on goal, and
Kinsley turned a defender inside out before
shooting into the side netting. Kinsley had an
even better chance three minutes later when Chris
Gibson's chipped pass put him clean through, but
he volleyed wildly over the bar.
Tring's failure to put the ball in the net proved
costly. On 62 minutes they gave the ball away at
the halfway line. Gavin Windell's pass put Ross
Stout clean through, and although Clark managed
to force Stout wide, he was still able to slip
the ball under the keeper to put Chalfont in
front from their first chance of the match.
However, Tring fought back and levelled the
scores four minutes later. Butler was manhandled
just outside the box to give Tring a free kick,
and although Kinsley's strike was not the best,
it took a deflection off the wall which
wrong-footed the keeper and trickled into the
corner of the net.
Tring should have gone on from there to win the
game, but instead they gave away another poor
goal. On 70 minutes a free kick was floated to
the far side of the penalty area, and the veteran
Kevin Davies connected with a header which looped
over the out-of-position Clark into the net to
put Chalfont back in front.
This time Tring were unable to find a response
and ended up with nothing from a game they had
utterly dominated for an hour. |
